L&T is a lot like Avid's AMA. It's a plug-in API that camera manufacturers can use as a hook to get files into FCP. I think it's mainly up to the camera manufacturers to write the code for their appropriate drivers. In some cases, there's the option to transcode and in other cases it's only a rewrap into QT.

FCP natively supports the codecs used for XDCAM, HD, EX, but not the native file wrappers. Since Sony's utility does the rewrap, but L&T doesn't, I presume it's because Sony is dragging its feet.

Same here. Saw this last night. FCP7 on 10.5.8. XDCAM-HD (from disc), NG through L&T. OK with Sony's XDCAM Transfer utility.

Re: [FCP-L] Flash card adapters

We've had two card readers.

The first one came from Maplin, cost £19.99, was plastic, and (most
importantly) had a lot of slop between the card edges and the reader.
Pins got bent. Not good.

The second is a PureMedia USB2 Multi-card reader from PC World and
cost the same. It's metal and there's no slop at all. It works
perfectly and fast.

We use L&T to get the material from the card to FCP.

Re: [FCP-L] Flash card adapters

If you care about speed, get one of these:
http://store.lexar.com/?category=22&subcategory=47&productid=RW034-001

I use it every week to pull in Flash XDR / Nano recordings.

Depending on your camera, the media should be in a Quicktime wrapper
and you just copy it to your media drive and import it to FCP with the
correct sequence setting.

Yes - XDCAM HD. I thought perhaps that L&T would let me transcode
selections to an FCP-friendly codec (isn't that what it's for?).

I'd avoid any card bearing the Silicon Image 3132 chipset. Although
there is a beta driver available for Snow Leopard, it's the first
update there's been in more than a year, and the chipset's been flaky
for far longer than that. I've also heard mixed reports about the new
driver.

I had some luck with a Sonnet ExpressCard eSATA adaptor (which uses
the 3132), but that stopped working around about 10.5.7, I think. The
3132-based desktop card I have never worked reliably - kernel panics
every fifteen minutes if I was lucky.

I've since bought a HighPoint RocketRAID 2314, with which I'm
reasonably happy. I'm using it with a cheap 4-bay (port multiplier)
enclosure; I offload finished projects to drives there, for archiving.
It's fast enough to edit off, but I tend to use internal drives for
that.

The problem you'll find is that almost every 'inexpensive' eSATA card
is based on the Sil3132.

Know nothing about these, but have just bought a cheapie camera (SD) for
contributors to use for video-diary stuff that uses flash cards.

Need to get the footage on to my G5... What do I need to know about
flash-card adapters?

Thanking y¹all in anticipation.

Re: [FCP-L] Congrats on the 2k user mark.

Well that is actually just the announcement. You will need to
participate in a paid Beta program which in 3 years you will eventually
know who that 2000th member is. And according to Avid-L2, that is not
really 2k since the initial members where from originally Avid-L
members. Pixel shifting members.
