Re: [FCP-L] QMaster - The lurking mystery within FCS

I guess maybe the other way to approach the question... in FCS are all
8 cores doing work most of the time?

I was at an editors workshop tonight. Half the group claimed to get
realtime effects & export from the timeline. They claimed all cores
were processing.

The other half insisted QMaster was the only way to get all cores
working on the clip via Compessor.

Interesting. You can certainly submit it that way, but it inevitably
fails, at least here. They should document that properly if it's not
possible to do, or better yet disable it somehow.

Nope. Can't do it.

The only way to use a Cluster is with a self-contained file.

Have you checked out schools or churches with a television ministry? Perhaps
there would be some tax benefit by donating to a university, church or
other non-profit.

[FCP-L] QMaster - The lurking mystery within FCS

OK, I now know what QMaster does and how AWESOME it is. I'm now exporting and converting in better than real-time speed.

My question...

Is it possible to send a clip from the timeline in FC to Compressor and have it use all (8 in my case) cores?

I have followed some threads that discuss this topic and find that many, like me, are having a problem doing this.

If I try to do it as described above each core will encounter a problem and the conversion will stop.

BUT, I have found a work around. From FC export QT, then take that file directly into Compressor, outside of FC. Works great. But... I would prefer to do it the first way (above.)

How are others doing it?

Thanks for the thoughts!

Dave

Just wondering what Optical Flow Work is? Is that a program or a process. Not a term I remember. Just curious.

Re: [FCP-L] Cannot "Media Manage" a subclip?

ok, found some media on a rugged drive.

nice long 90 min clip.
ProRes PAL (720x576 25fps)

made a 5 second SUB-clip,

and it Media Manages (COPY, delete unused) just fine in FCP 6.06

are you sure you un-tick every thing in the Media Manager that says
"Include"?

does it indicate it will trim the clip (in the two green bars at the
top) and then NOT trim it?

Re: [FCP-L] Cannot "Media Manage" a subclip?

i would love to have a closer look at this,
but am on the road right now.

i have often used Media Manager to successfully trim a single CLIP.
(not subclip)
generally from the timeline.
i do this if i need to create a trimmed, stand-alone version for
optical flow work.

if it really is just one sublcip,
open it in the viewer,
and Export.

[FCP-L] HD Expo... err, I mean Createasphere

Just got back from this and nothing really new to report other than a revised model of the EX-1.

More 3-D presentations and monitors.

Seeing a Blackmagic banner at the daVinci booth is weird.

In previous years I might run into one or two people I know at this expo outside of booth personnel. This year I ran into tons of folks I know. The reason.... None of them are working! Don't know about the rest of the world but LA is hurting.

Re: [FCP-L] slightly OT: PS CS2 RAW conversion

On CS3 it is under File, Automate, Batch. You might have to make an
action for the Play menu, or there might be a save as JPEG actin
already.

Re: [FCP-L] slightly OT: PS CS2 RAW conversion

Most still camera's come with free software to convert the RAW images
to jpeg. Usually it's named batch converting or something like that.
What kind of camera? Canon, Nikon, ?

If you do it in Photoshop, you can automate a task.

Not at my machine right now, but look for the Batch selection. I
think it is under the file menu. Point it to your raw folder, choose
an export to folder and select save as Jpeg. Hopefully that will get
you started or someone else will chime in with the "exact menu" choices.

I'm sure there's an automated way to convert them without opening them all

Re: [FCP-L] Cannot "Media Manage" a subclip?

I've used trick 2 with subclips, separating alternating clips into two
bins, but this apparently does not work if you only have one subclip
from a media file. If you only have one subclip from a masterclip, it
won't even make a "copy" of the media much less discard the media you
don't want. Have not tested "move" because, frankly, I don't care.
I hate "move" in MM unless I have no other choice. I copy and then
delete.

[FCP-L] Re: OT: Anybody want ten thousand used IMX tapes?

Has to be an installation artist in your neck of the woods who would jump at access so so much raw material

Re: [FCP-L] Re: VITC Sucks

well,
Sony protocol gives you the option to ask the deck for specific TC.
From memory, that can be LTC, VITC, corrected TC, CTL and perhaps some other
stuff.
I don't think it would be a good idea to spit out something else than the
controller is asking for.

I would think that switching the TC reader to LTC instead of Auto (on the
deck) would spit out the LTC value over 422. It works like that at least
when I'm doing VTR to VTR editing with the 5500. I only have FCP and in the
device control settings I can choose between LTC, VITC, and LTC+VITC. I
switch this to LTC and it ignores the VITC. Can't say for sure about Avid
device controls but I'd be surprised if that weren't an option in there
somewhere...
