[FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Well I was leary of letting Rubin near my computer after he chewed through a firewire 400 to 800 cable but now that I have the Kensington Expert Mouse/Trackball Rubin is doing quite well with digitizing. The relatively large track ball is a lot like his toys so it's a good match. He has been bothering me in the middle of the night asking "Why isn't dynamic trim the default?" He tells me all the other dogs at the park still run Avid, it is the Hollywood Dog park after all. ;-)

[FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Your right. I have never sat in an edit bay with computer monitors larger than 20 inches as I can remember. And I don't understand why with more screen real estate you just can't increase the size of the interface to make things larger...ie text. Just tonight I switched from VGA to DVI from my MPB to my 20"Dell and the FCP windows got smaller. I can make them bigger but the text and video windows stay the same relative size. Why? I know I'm missing some crucial knowledge about this stuff and am hoping for some friendly incite. I just want to set myself up as comfortably as I can at home. Screen size never used to matter to me. Now it does but I obviously don't know how to solve the problem except that now I apparently need a dog and a plasma monitor. Ha.

Feh!

Go to the Dollar Store (not the ripoff Dollar General) and buy a ton of reading glasses for $1 pair. I keep the diopter sticker on because I shift between 1.5, 2.5, 3.5x depending on how fine the work I'm doing is. Leave them all around the house.

My real glasses correct for astigmatism -- need them for night driving and movies -- same pair of bifocals (small magnifiers so I can ignore them) for 7 years since they don't get trashed when I solder and drill and all that stuff.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

I have a 30" Dell - great monitor -- but often run it at 1920 x 1200, which does make the fonts bigger.

Recently I picked up (needed a cheap HDMI monitor) a 28" Hanns-G 1920 x 1200 for $300 from NewEgg, which is not bad at all for the price. Bright, obviously not a grading monitor but ok for a computer monitor. There is a version that is newer and $50 more with 3x HDMI inputs, this has but one. But it's a lot easier on my old eyes from 2+ feet away than my old 23" HP LCDs were.

As for the 2048 x 11xx Samsungs Steve Hullfish wrote about, I remember them being problematic with many video cards due to the non-standard res. 2048 is a good thing, of course -- but not a common preset.

Costco seems to be selling these for under $200 each.

Now if you can get that dog to edit, that's a real concept.

I don't believe you have ever sat in front of a 30" monitor. Perhaps you should do so. The font's are not bigger - they are SMALLER (to get more stuff on the screen).
I am planning on getting a talking seeing eye dog to assist me with viewing the monitors.

With that said, you could get a 42" Plasma screen (like a Panasonic TH42PD12UK for $839), and keep the resolution at 1280x768. Now THIS will be big !

Oh I've got glasses... now. Transition Lenses Bi Focals. ( I was waiting for the glasses suggestion) The problem is that glasses don't work with the distances I sit from the monitors at either my client's suites or at home. Don't really need them for stuff that's a few feet away. It just seems that bigger would be better for an editing monitor at home then I though perhaps two would be better. The weak link right now is the 15" laptop screen for the browser. I'll save the dual monitor set up for when I purchase a Mac Pro next year some time. In the mean time I like the suggestion of going with a 27" or even a 30". Maybe I can manage a narrowed browser window and the timeline, viewer, and canvas on the same screen.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I've monitored the generations of the Avid-L for many years and found them to be of great value. It's nice to see the same from the FCP-L.

I also just started using FCP after twenty years of Avid so... I can't see anymore and now the steering wheel is on the other side of the car. I hope I don't crash.

[FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

OK, I'm home. Total hours of sleep over four nights: 16. (Concert will
be broadcast nationally on TVOne on Dec 13 and Christmas morning, I
think, if anyone wants to see, though cutting a two hour, eight
camera concert with 15 minutes of "profile vignettes" in only four
days (offline AND on-line) does not lead to a product that I'm
completely proud of. Check out "Joy of Christmas.").

I have NOT taken these monitors out of the box yet, so I can't comment
on them, but I have a trusted reseller that recommended them because
they're the ones he uses personally. It's the SyncMaster 2343. The SKU
is 729507805276. It looks like the reseller actually had it shipped
from NewEgg. It says the res is 2048 x 1152.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

My eyes are going completely. There are so many good monitors out there today, that include the DELL, and HP, etc., but the real ability to be able to see
is in your reading glasses. I am still using "Wal Mart" off the shelf reading glasses (1.5), but the time has come for me to get a real pair of perscription glasses.
Getting a better monitor, is not going to help you see any better.

Thanks for the input so far on this topic. What's happening is that my eyes are starting to go. I've been a full time editor since 82 and it's frustrating not being able to see clearly anymore. Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Rob,

I don't know if you can satisfactorily drive two external monitors from a
MBP. There were, for a little while, some Expresscard video adapters, I
think...but I don't know if those were available with Mac drivers or if they
delivered decent video (I kinda suspect not in both cases).

One think you could consider would be a single 27-inch or 30-inch LCD. Not
the same as two 24-inch monitors, but drivable from most recent MBPs (like
two-year old 15-inch MBPs)

Best,

Jim

There is however a large collection of negative reviews all over the web regarding green/pink issues on some of the monitors that Dell has shipped out. Anybody with this monitor had to deal with this? My real question is, what are other people with similar set ups to mine using for an external monitor? While I'm at it I might as well ask if anybody is using two external monitors with the MPB? If so, how are you accomplishing that?

Re: [FCP-L] OT: Monitors

[FCP-L] Re: OT Compressor Strip CC

Agreed. But FCP 7 won't help you in your situation. It does allow you to capture and add CC to HD using the Kona 3 card. But that is done on output. For yo take advantage of that, you would need two systems, one to play out through the Kona with a caption file attached, and another to capture that stream through a Kona while maintaining CC data.

Re: [FCP-L] Question about color correction

But you SHOULD buy it, it is a very good book - plus the author gives freely on the boards.
