[FCP-L] Re: Sony EX1R Post Workflow

Yes, Long GOP. EX files.

The camera is the EX1 with revisions to answer some of the problems with
original. Still a lousy camera to handhold though. Not sure how you got CineAlta
in there though. That is the upper line of SR cameras. Not even the same
division of Sony.

<<But if I'm right, what is the general post workflow? Getting the files out of
the camera, cutting with them at full rex, etc.?>>

SxS cards that can be copied onto a drive (At least two for safety). Tim answered the other workflow questions.

You can use cheap digital cards via an adapter you can buy on the internet
which makes them basically as cheap to keep as hard drives eliminating the
copying step. You lose some off speed shooting ability with the this approach.

[FCP-L] New Sony roadmap

Just got back from the Sony event in Hollywood. They showed a bit of
their roadmap on the high end stuff.

SR Stock prices will drop 25% starting with the small tapes.

SRW-9000 camera will be upgradeable to 35MM chip and their new SR
memory chip.

SR Memory chip is about the size of a laptop PC card. Where current
SxS cards have a sustained throughput of 800Mbps, the SR cards will
have a sustained throughput of 5Gbps! The first will hold 200Gigs with
a TB expected within a year or so. (Yeah I know, Soon Only Not Yet)

The SRW-5800 has an upgrade coming that will allow double speed
capture and output including MXF file format. Also an SR lite format
that will handle 220Mbps MPEG-4 in MXF. So you will have 220, 440 &
880 capability. Current decks are upgradeable.

The coolest thing for us is the a new Transcoder box. Pretty much
anything in & out in RT or double speed from SR decks. Including MXF,
DPX, J2K and DNxHD. So you can run a couple decks in at the same time
and spit out various formats with various burn ins. Couldn't get any
ship date or pricing info yet.

Re: [FCP-L] Sony EX1R Post Workflow

I've worked with source from this camera. Looks great, IMHO.

Works very much like P2 workflow, but you can buy cheaper SD adapter cards
like the MXR Adapter <http://e-films.com.au/shoppingcart/pages/mxr.html>.
Only downside to the cheaper media is no over/undercranking on the SD cards.

Copy the SxS card to one (or more!) SATA drive for archiving.
ShotPut<http://tinyurl.com/ybtev2o>automates this nicely with
verification.

On a Mac FCP system, you can either use Log and Transfer or the XDCam
Transfer software to screen and import the footage.

The files come in as XDCamEX QTs, 1440x1080. My suggestion, edit them into a
ProRes timeline and hit render every once in a while. It makes life easier
when exporting at the end of the day...

Edit at full rez, but use an Octo-Core to be happier.

On Avid, I guess you would import with AMA...

That's pretty sick.

Seen this?

$200 or so for finished videos? People shoot and edit them in a
matter of hours. Quality is secondary to quantity. Over 4000 videos
made daily.

Re: [FCP-L] OT: where to learn color

Rick,
you can go on Linda.com or is it lynda.com and watch about 8 or 9 hrs
worth of stuff. it's not real expensive either. but if i were you i'd
get crackin. Color is not a MAC interface and does take time to get
used to. Also, get yourself a Trackball. it makes a world of
difference. and you can chord the buttons together to make a middle
mouse , which is definitely needed.

good luck.
Marc

[FCP-L] OT: where to learn color

I've never used color, but have a possible gig coming up that is color correcting a finished show. Without having access to a current FCS system before then, where is the best place to learn it? I've tons of color work in DS, Symphony, various Quantel systems and smoke.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

That's the way it is, which is why setting up the clips and using batch export is an easier option if you've got lots to do

Re: [FCP-L] Semi-OT: Squeeze v. Episode

We use Squeeze here at the office, but since it jumped from $499 to $799 we
are pursuing other options.
It is quite slow on my 2 x 2.8 GHz quad-core intel xeon 4gb ram MAC as well.
Much faster on a pc!

But have anyone tried out Expression Encoder ?
