[FCP-L] Re: Murch "back on Avid" for at least one film...

I asked him to come to talk to lafcpug about "bounce(ing) between systems" so your "remark" about "holding a conference" is my doing, my idea and not his. Granted, its not exactly a provocative topic as many of you do the same thing all the time. I'm just grateful Walter said yes, and judging by the sold out crowd, others are too.

Also to be clear, Walter is only part of the event this night. As clearly stated on the agenda page, the theme of the show is "know both tools if you want to compete in Hollywood." So, we are devoting the entire night to the Avid MC 4.0. This isn't the first time we have done this and won't be the last. Despite the "FCP" in lafcpug, we could care less what tool you use. It just so happens it's the tool most of us chose, so we devote most of our time and resources to help each other out with it.

Kind of like this list.

I've been stuck having to use some Sony MPEG files and have been able to get the audio by opening them up in MPEG Streamclip and exporting to the format I needed. Of course, I wouldn't go buy a camera that was going to force me to do that.

5 or 6 Aurora NewsEdits were sold to Al Jazeera English Channel for channel launch 2006 (Qatar, Middle East). A few Final Cut Suites+Canopus were also thrown into the mix. Rumor has it NewsEdit was/is extremely unpopular amongst the edit staff there.

[FCP-L] Don't tell EVERYONE about FCP-L

Hey All,

FCP-L has grown a lot. That's mostly good. But this list aims to host a
conversation between experienced professional users of FCP.

We've recently had a growing number of newbie questions and members. Nothing
against new and non-professional users. There are good online resources for
those folks. But FCP-L isn't one of them. Of course new users can lurk on
FCP-L, but some newbies don't lurk.

In order to keep the FCP-L conversation focused I'd like to ask all of you
to be selective when you pass along information about FCP-L to others,
especially other email lists and web forums.

If the person is a post or video/film professional (e.g., perhaps a
long-time Avid editor who's new to FCP, an ENG photog who wants to come in
out of the rain, or of course a long-time user of FCP), or the list is
mostly populated by appropriate professionals (e.g. Avid-L2, CML, even
RAMPS), then feel free to mention FCP-L when appropriate (i.e., in response
to a question, but not as a big FCP-L promotional campaign).

But if the person's brand new to editing, or the list has a lot of members
who aren't serious editors and FCP users but perhaps are earnest and
enthusiastic, and really want to learn then consider directing them to some
FCP lists/forums with broader foci. Creativecow.net, cutter talk, etc. To be
clear, I'm not slagging the cow or cutter talk. Both are good places, but
they're different from FCP-L.

If the person is an idiot or jerk, or the list is full of such folks, just
point them to the Apple store where they can buy a copy of FCP to replace
the pirated version they're using now. Or send them here:

http://www.oitp.org/

That'll confuse them.

People who want to join FCP-L still need to have their subscription request
approved by a moderator, and I'm being more selective these days. So there
is some access control. But my preference is to err on the side of
inclusion and admission. And I'm seeing requests from people who don't
belong on FCP-L and who frankly won't benefit from the discussion. And then
I get follow up emails when their subscription isn't approved, and that
could all become a drag.

This might seem elitist, but there you go. Hope you all can help...

Thanks for reading,

Jim "building an empire...but not with this list" Feeley
FCP-L co-moderator

[FCP-L] Problems Importing 720P/60P AVCHD Files

I have recently been experimenting with a Panasonic HMC150, which
shoots AVCHD. I have no problems importing files shot at 720P/24PN
into FCP 6.0.6 via Log and Transfer, but every time I try to import
files shot at 720P/60P FCP crashes. I have tried changing the Capture
Preset from 'AJA Kona LH: 720p 23.98 Apple ProRes 422 VFR' (which is
working fine for the 24p footage) to 'AJA Kona LH: 720p 59.94 Apple
ProRes 422' and 'AJA Kona LH: 720p 59.94 DVCProHD' and 'AJA Kona LH:
720p 59.94 8 bit' to no avail, crashes every time. I have left the
other setting alone. E.g., the Sequence Preset is on 23.98 because the
point of importing the 60p footage was to cut it into an existing
23.98 sequence for slow motion effect. Also, the 60p clips play back
fine when previewed in the Log and Transfer tool. Any ideas?

Thanks,
____

How many frames is it in the XML? Export the XML for the clip (select
just the clip) and open it in a text editor. Search for the clip name
and look around that area for the frame count. Start frame number and
frame count shouuld both be there.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

So, doing test with VTR Xchange. It starts the capture on the correct
frame, but adds frames at the end. It adds 6 frames each time. So a
1sec capture becomes 30frms. A 2sec capture becomes 54frms. And a
3sec capture becomes 78frms. While this still blows at least it
appears consistent which means I can make some sort of automated
process to delete the extra frames.

Ok, did another test using VTR Xchange with direct to DPX and it
captures the expected frame range. But what I don't like about this
process is no EDL ingest.

Grumble grumble.

Oh less-expensive-but-less-functional Smoke on Mac, can you save me
from this?

Thanks for the suggestion Oliver.
