Re: [FCP-L] Color listserve?

Bob Sliga is a great colorist. I used to travel to Baltimore and Chicago to utilize his talents. I remember him telling me about this new Final Touch thing and how it just might change things. I look forward to that DVD if Bob is involved (and you too, Steve).

Dom: Sorry about that. You're right.

For cross-platform editing I'd go with Kerry's recommendation of DV and HDV if it'll fit on the data DVD; otherwise I'll second your reco for H.264 if file size is the priority.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Codec Conundrum for Cross Platform Data DVD

Looking at the amount of video that you need to provide, I think that the
closest you will get is DV for the SD material and HDV for the HD.

According to my calculations we're talking about a total of 40 minutes of
HD and 6 minutes of SD. Even DV and HDV may be too large for that much
material.

Using Martin Baker's Videospace widget, we see that 40 minutes of 1080i as
HDV requires almost 7.5 GB. 6 minutes of DV is 1.27 GB. So you have a total
of almost 9 gigs. (How much data can you actually store on a DVD9?)

The bit rates for DVCPro 50 and DVCPro HD will consume 2 and 4 times as much
space respectively. And even ProRes Proxy only save a little bit of space
from DVCPro 50.

I can't comment on the JPG codecs since I never use them, but I would think
that any computer editing system would be able to work with DV and HDV
files.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Codec Conundrum for Cross Platform Data DVD

Apple's DVC Pro 50 and HD codec are not available on the PC side
without extra software (like Raylight).

High bit rate h.264 might be the safest in regards to cross platform viability.

For SD, I really like DVCPro50 -- as opposed to DV50 -- because of the 4:2:2 color space. For HD, the DVCPro HD codec is very efficient and easy to edit with. I also think Apple ProRes is a good choice. Mac + Windows codec (or links to download them) can be supplied on your data DVD.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Codec Conundrum for Cross Platform Data DVD

I've been delivering videos for a project in PhotoJPEG. At 100% a 4 min video was around 8GBs. At 98% they are about 1.5GBs. These are progressive movies though.

PhotoJPEG at 95%+ becomes RGB and triples/quadruples the filesize. At
that "quality" it can be a hog to edit, due to it's bandwidth needs.
Be aware that it cannot contain field-based video either.
