[FCP-L] Conversion & Rendering Slips Footage

Weird glitch. Rendering or exporting causes the footage to slip 3 or
more seconds. What?!?

I got some 3 GB HDV files from a client's client's video funhouse.
They're full-size, but are both mashed into WMV files. (I'm guessing
Adobe Premiere on a PC.) I'm editing ProRes (SD) and have converted
these files to ProRes in Compressor. Now when I cut them into a
sequence they are properly positioned. BUT when I render, the footage
in the clip slips backwards at 3 or more seconds. (I haven't measured
them all yet).

I tried breaking the render and exporting, Reference or Self-
Contained, and it still shifts. No sound recorded to compare. I'm
going to test the WMVs directly (Flip4Mac import delays), then try
reconverting select footage by hand into other formats, try to strip
timecode, etc.

Any ideas?? VITC/LTC or DF calculation error? Lots of troubleshooting
ahead.

RE: [FCP-L] Offline RT question

Not up to FCP 7 yet, so no ProRes Proxy for me...

The producer is unlikely to do any "actual" editing, but if he can organize his thoughts and make selects, I'll be in good shape.

I may just make a clone of the original drive to a bare SATA and keep that in the office and let this guy have the original.

Thanks!

Re: [FCP-L] Offline RT question

Have you considered using ProRes Proxy instead? It consumes about 30% of the
space of ProRes and 20% of ProRes HQ so, depending on what you are starting
with you would only need 250 to 350 GB of storage.

It makes no sense to work in any other but actual frame size since it can
add problems during the online.

Even so, given the costs of TB hard drives, it is hard to imagine that it
would be worthwhile spending the time to Media Manage a TB worth of video.
Of course, perhaps there are other concerns like the number of real-time
streams that you can handle during the off-line process. If that is the
case, I would really consider the ProRes proxy.

Re: [FCP-L] Production question: Lights

Hi Wes,

I am not a shooter, never been one and don't even play one on tv. However,
way back when I was involved in audio-video recording before my editing
days, when we worked with very modest budgets, we used Smith-Victor lights.

I see that B&H still carries them and a two or three light set can be had
for under $500 depending on your requirements. I was surprised to see that
many of their kits now use fluorescent lamps.

It may be worth a look.

Re: [FCP-L] Fix for Desktop Preview bug in 7.0.1

update:

not long after doing this,
i got a Software Update announcement.

i wasn't sure if it was a result of me changing the file
DesktopVideoout.component over, or not,

so i ran the software update, and Desktop Preview BROKE again!

i quite FCP, ran software update again, and got the all clear, no more
updates.

I then replaced the DesktopVideoout.component AGAIN,

Desktop Preview now works (again)

and now when i run Software Update, i once more get the "Pro
Applications Update 2009-01" notification!

so i'm leaving it alone now,
happy that my desktop preview now works

Re: [FCP-L] Production question: Lights

I'm A big fan of the Lowel Rifa lights.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/285888-REG/Lowel_LCP_955LB_Rifa_eX_55_Pro.html

Use the hard pro light for rim/back light and get another Rifa 44 for
fill. Maybe get an extra Lowel Omni light with barn doors to use for
background lighting.

This is kind of the setup I have and I've had mine for years and they
travel well.

Feel free to contact me of you have any questions.

[FCP-L] interview lighting

HI Wes;
Don't know how much you have to spend but I filmed a studio interview this weekend and I lit the set with 8 lights. I know this is overkill probably for what you have in mind but if you want to set your work apart, take the time to light properly. The camera is only a tool that records what you set in front of it. I used multiple softboxes, diffused fill lights, lower front fill, hair light, and a gelled spotlight on the background. All of my lights were fluorescent. Fluorescent doesn't throw large quantities of light and the light falls off quicker than tungsten but it gives a nice smooth quality and without much heat at all. I bought several lights at www.coollights.biz. I would think that unless you go the worklights route, you will probably be spending at least $1200 for a kit. And yes try ebay too. Good luck.

[FCP-L] Fix for Desktop Preview bug in 7.0.1

After upgrading to FCP 7.0.1 via the latest ProApps update, some people have reported clunky playback in Digital Cinema Desktop Preview.

Mattew Brodet posted a fix at Creative Cow:
<http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1060132>
----------------------------------------------------------
In "Library" folder on the Macintosh HD drive go into the "Quicktime" folder.
Delete the "DesktopVideoout.component" file.
Replace that file with the same file from Final Cut Pro 7.0.
Be sure to be logged in as a administrator.
----------------------------------------------------------

Now, if you don't have a back up of your Final Cut Pro 7.0 system,
here's how to get that file from your Final Cut Studio install disk:

Load up your Final Cut Studio Install disk,
or if you've made a disk image (good idea) access that.

Inside that, notice that the "Instal Final Cut Studio" package is actually an Alias,
so right-click on that and "Show Original"

You'll be taken to a folder called "Installer" inside of which is another folder called "Packages"

Inside the Packages folder locate the VideoOutSupport.pkg,
right-click on it, and "Show Package Contents"

Inside the Contents folder, locate the Archive.paz.gz file.
Drag it to the desktop, and double click on it to un-zip it.

This will create a folder called "Library"
Open it, go to the QuickTime folder inside it,
and there you will find the file "DesktopVideoout.component"

Put this file in Macintosh HD > Library >QuickTime,
replacing the similarly named file there.

Digital Cinema Desktop Preview should now work.

cheers,
nick

Hi Wes,

Are you traveling to them, or will they travel to you? Is this something
you'd want to haul to tradeshows (or somesuch), or mostly use around
Seattle?

A camera op friend of mine says "I own exactly the amount of Lowel equipment
that I want...None." But it is cheap, and the Rifa light is pretty clever. I
have a mix of LTM Peppers and small Arri lights, along with one Lowel Tota
that's used in a Chimera. All fits in a nice wheeled LTM case. But even
buying some stuff used, taking my time, and keeping the kit small...with
accessories, I ended up spending...um I'm not sure. The kit has paid for
itself, but that's because I use it regularly. How often do you expect to
use your kit?

And like Andy says, would renting work? Figure $100-$150/day for a decent
kit.
