Re: [FCP-L] Congrats on the 2k user mark.

Well that is actually just the announcement. You will need to
participate in a paid Beta program which in 3 years you will eventually
know who that 2000th member is. And according to Avid-L2, that is not
really 2k since the initial members where from originally Avid-L
members. Pixel shifting members.

David,

Here's a brief article on how to set up a Qmaster Cluster. It's a
little dated (not much), but I'm using FCS3 and it worked great for me.

Re: [FCP-L] Considering Canon XH-A1s. Any reviews? Used?

I use the Sony EX1.
It's NOT a huge problem. It only happens if entire frame is filled. I've shoot lots of fireworks displays and NEVER see it. None of my clients have ever complained. If they don't like camera flashes it ALL looks ugly. If they don't mind, they don't see the rolling shutter flash as something noteworthy.

Sony Clip Browser 2.6, available in Europe now and probably in USA around December (It's free) will detect and fix these frames if need be.

There are benefits to 1/2" chips made possible by CMOS.
Personally I'd prefer having the 1/2 chips with much better depth of field control than 1/3 chips and smaller as well as better low light sensitivity. They also don't streak when hit with hot light points like CCD chips.

Keep in mind even the RED uses a rolling shutter.
Panasonic "3MOS" chips are also CMOS rolling shutter too.

Thanks for the QMaster tip.

I've seen the icon but have never tried using it... until now.

FWIW, not that I'm any kind of authority, but a couple of months ago I
purchased a refurbed 8-core with the 3.2GHz processors, 2GB ram
upgraded to 3rd party 16GB and it screams when it comes to Compressor,
particularly using a Qmaster Cluster. (I will jump to 32GB after I
get my MXO2.) I don't know benchmarks, but I've been very pleased.

Re: [FCP-L] Considering Canon XH-A1s. Any reviews? Used?

There are some GREAT comparisons out there comparing the Canon to the new Panasonic AVCHD cameras. As a lifelong Canon user, these articles caused me to convert all of my Canon's to Panasonic's.

Additionally, the newer Sony HD cameras ($5K - $10 range) have a rolling shutter that you should be aware of if you plan to do any work where a photographer's flash may be involved. This is a huge problem and can ruin your footage. Sony promised a fix. Not sure if it ever came out.

Colleagues,
It'll be replacing my VX-2000, for roughly the same range of corporate, music videos, documentary, mostly single-handed, projects.
Probably buying this week.

I used one for a few hours and I like the picture though the LCD screen is a joke!

Nice audio options.

Any warnings, raves, sources for new or good condition used?

Thanks for whatever info you can offer.

Back to grieving the blue chip on the VX-2000. Everything's gone mustardy; not a salable look, except maybe a couple of hip hop videos.

Cordially,

[FCP-L] Rocket Cine - X

Sorry for the brief commerical-ish mention, but, along with all the
dramatic RED gear announcements last week, they casually mentioned an
update to a couple applications - including 'RocketCine-X,' and a
firmware upgrade for their render engine, RED Rocket. (I know, really
unfortunate name.)

For those of you that haven't heard of it, RED Rocket is a hardware
render engine specifically designed to do a full-resolution real-time
render of the RED Raw files to a more useable format, like ProRes for
Final Cut, or DNXHD for Avid. The new files are rendered in roughly
real time, rather than than 6 or 8 times real time you see with
software-only rendering. So, instead of 'baking files overnight,' we
can generate an hours worth of footage from your raw files, in about
an hour!

(For techno-heads, this is at at FULL debayer - not half-debayer. In
other words, drawing from the full resolution of the source file to
create the newer file for editorial.)

The other super-cool thing this software update allows us to do is to
create files in the Avid-native format - MXF. Before, to prepare an
Avid project, we created intermediate quicktime files, then copied
those files a second time to make them into Avid files. Now we're
generating Avid-ready media right from RED Rocket. Quicktime for
final cut is equally fast.

What does this mean to you, the producer/editor/filmmaker?

We have RED ROCKET for rent by the hour - at a very low rate, through
our Culver City location, www.digitalservicestation.com Full serve
or self serve. Prepare dailies, render files for VFX or other
grading, much, much faster than you can with your naked Mac or PC.
Huge time saver.

Thanks for your attention - please return to your normal conversation.

Feel free to email me directly if you have questions, or even if you
want to tell me how the thousands of RED cameras already working every
day, really, secretly, suck, and how film will never die... etc.

I'm not really sure that you can import anything other than XDCamEX through Log and Transfer.

From Sony's Web site about the L&T plug-in:

NOTE: XDCAM Transfer has the following advantages over Log and Transfer

Support both XDCAM EX & XDCAM Disc

Handles XDCAM EX and XDCAM Disc clips

mounting SxS & PD media at the same time

MXF export capability

Can write edited material back to Professional Disc in MXF files

[FCP-L] Re: Mac Pro 8 Core - Speed Question

You have to do your homework. Looking at the Apple Store page this morning, an 8-core 2.26 with 12GB RAM is $3599. A 4-core 2.93 with 12 GB RAM is $4349. A big part of that difference is how they configure the RAM chips. 3rd party RAM will save you bucks.

My point is that if you go with a 4-core, you really do want the faster processor, so it becomes a wash. In this comparison, the 8-core is actually the cheaper machine for basically similar performance, from what I've seen of the benchmarks.

The Panasonic model to which Steve refers is the HMC40. At a street price of
$2K (add $500 for the XLR block) it is economical, offers a solid AVCHD
codec at multiple bit-rates, and has good manual options. At $1K less than a

Re: [FCP-L] Log and Transfer Q

I have some DVDs that were burned with the exact contents of an XDCAM
disk shot in camera. I've used them for Avid training (with both AMA
and import) and browsing with the Sony XDCAM Transfer app). All good.
If I point L&T to one of these, the window blinks briefly but does not
fill with files. I have another disk image that contains stuff written
back to XDCAM in an Avid. Sony's XDCAM Transfer App is OK with this
but L&T gives me an error along the lines of 'Unsupported media/
invalid directory structure'.

Makes sense. The prevailing wisdom is 2GB/core. The newest CPUs are
multithreaded, so an 8-core machine gives you 16 virtual processors,
hence 32GB RAM. Of course, you have to have apps that take advantage
of that.

Re: [FCP-L] Log and Transfer Q

I've been trying to track and ID this problem, Roger.

Was the disc you have copied from an original? That's one of my working
theories at the moment.

[FCP-L] Log and Transfer Q

Just upgraded to FCP 7 and I'm looking at Log and Transfer. I'm
testing with a kosher copy of an XDCAM disk with all the correct
subfolders. This can be read correctly by Avid's AMA and also with
Sony's XDCAm transfer utility. With L &T however, I either get an
'Incorrect file and folder structure' error or nothing. I've searched
the web and followed a couple of suggestions I found there but still
no good

MacBook Pro 2.33Ghz, 3GB RAM, OS 10.5.8, QT 7.6.2. FCP 7.0.1. Any ideas?
