Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

So in essence when FCP captures the clip there are some handles that are never seen in FCP or QTPro but under the hood there are actually more frames of video in the clip. There must be some metadata that chokes the access of FCP or maybe QT on which FCP is based to not access the handles. The conversion program from AJA must not have the same metadata constraint. This kinda reminds me of Avid when you set the batch capture to optimize speed instead of disk space. In that mode Avid will continue to capture one big clip when there are two smaller clips that are close enough to each other. In that situation Avid only creates one media file instead of two but the clips in the bin never include the gap area. Very interesting.

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

So, in FCP I got under the File menu to Log and Capture. I enter for
a start TC 00:01:00:00. For an end TC I enter 00:01:01:00. I capture
the clip. In FCP when I load the clip in the viewer that is the exact
frame range displayed. When I reveal file in Finder I open the .mov
file in QTpro. The frame range is exactly what I expect.
00:01:00:00 thru 00:01:01:00. Then I load that same .mov file into
AJA QTtoDPX and Translate it to a DPX sequence it makes 47 frames (one
I did earlier was 48, but this one ended up being 47). When I open
the first DPX file the burn-in is 00:00:59:21. The last frame has the
burn-in TC 00:01:01:19. I don't get it.

The source tape is HDSR 1080psf 23.976 4:4:4 RGB. The codec used in
FCP is AJA KONA 3- 1080psf 23.98 DL 10-bit Uncompressed Log RGB. TC
convert on the deck is set to Line.

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

Logged as in open the capture tool in FCP and log a clip. Enter a
start TC and and end TC. Capture that clip from tape. FCP and QTpro
will only display those frames that are logged. But when frames are
extracted via QTtoDPX you end up with more frames.

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

Perhaps I'm not understanding what you mean by logged. If I start with a QT movie that has frames numbered 1 to 25 how can I end up with a conversion that has numbers beyond 25? Where are the handles coming from? If you see the number 26 where did it come from? I guess by logged you must be selecting a portion of a QT that has more frames.

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

Yes, the burn-in is beyond what is logged. I log a clip that is 25
frames long. FCP and QTpro display it as a 25 frame file that's
starts and ends on the expected frames. But when it's opened in
QTtoDPX and extracted to frames it is 48 frames long. No frames are
repeated. Each one is really really there. Every captured files has
1 to 3 frames on the head and 22 or 23 frames on the tail added beyond
what is logged.

Now this is all in a 23.976 FCP project. Actually more than one. I
have not tried any of these test in projects at different frame
rates. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow. But this is jacked up that I
can't just capture what I logged.

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

If you start with 25 frames with burned in time code and now have 48 frames are the numbers in the burn in beyond the original 25 frame limits of start and stop. I really don't see how that could happen if your original clip only had 25 frames. Are the DPX frames coming from different fields? Just typing out loud here.

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

As an example. I have a clip that I logged as 1:01, I keep forgetting
that FCP is outpoint inclusive. In the FCP bin it shows as 1:01. In
the Viewer it shows as 1:01 and if I switch to frames it shows as 25.
If I move through the clip one frame at a time I count 25 frames. If
I reveal in finder and open that in QTpro it shows as 1:02 because QT
tends to be sloppy, but close enough. If I move through the clip in
QTpro one frame at a time I count 25 frames. I then open that file in
QTtoDPX and it list it as 48 frames long. ?????? I then Translate
that to a file sequence and sure enough it makes 48 frames of
picture. No frames are duplicated. I know this because I used the
monitor out jacks on the deck so I have a TC burn.

I had noticed this all sometime back and really didn't care at the
time, but now we are trying to use the system to capture material for
a VFX company. They really don't like having to roto and animate on
more frames then required. And it also bumps the cost up a bit. So I
would really like to figure out why the system is doing this.

FCP 6.0.5
QT 7.6
OSX 10.5.5

Jay

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

When you run into frame rate or duration issues, it's always
worthwhile to run the clip through Cinema Tool. Conform it to some
frame rate, and back to the frame rate you need.

Have you tried cleaning up long frames? Tools/Long Frames.

Also, when you switch the FCP TC displays to frames, do you see the
expected numbers?

This issue seems to point to QuickTime as the culprit. Are you certain
that OS, QT and FCP are all in versions that work together?

Re: [FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree

When you selectively read just the section that will fit your
reasoning it may seem that way. But upon further reading of the
entire post you realize that regardless of the duration of the shot
that 1 to 3 frames are added to the head of the shot and 22 or 23
frames are added to the tail. FCP and QTpro both report the length as
expected and logged, but when extracting to a file sequence the number
of frame is consistently wrong by anywhere from 23 to 26 frames.
Weather the logged shot is 1sec, 5 sec, 10 sec, 2 min, 3:12, 3:12:14,
or any other length of shot tried.

Re: [FCP-L] Murch "back on Avid" for at least one film...

Veering wildly off topic, but NewsEdit is very much alive and well (and virtually unchanged) ... Since the release of version 6 (when it went HD) it has been sold under the name "Aurora". It's currently at version 7.

Something is converting it to 29.97.
