Agreed. However, none of which are required for FCS3.

That's for a high end ATI graphics card, a 12 TB Fusion RAID,
monitors, loaded with RAM, the octo and Kona 3. No software.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: New tech from Silverado - take a guess...

The Ultrascope includes the price of the video card and the software
for $695 I think...maybe it's $795. Anyway, with a cheap PC you'd be
in around $1500. Torrey's solution should be a little more expensive
than that because it is rackmountable and small in size, which will
command a premium, but I agree with Bob that if it pushes $2000, it's
only worth it for people who are really pushed for rack real estate.

Actually I just bought a new 8-core and it didn't cost even half of that even with software. I'm not counting KONA cards or external storage, of course. You can run FCS3 on an iMac or a laptop. You can even run it on lesser machines if you aren't too worried about Color or Motion. Apple is in a win-win either way. Undoubtedly 50% of new machine sales for both Avid-based systems and Adobe-based systems are going to be Macs. Bottom line is that Apple doesn't need to do anything with FCS in order to get new hardware sales.

Re: [FCP-L] Anyone install Perian ?

My flv icons were always the simple document icon,
so i cant comment on that.

but for me, Preian is found not in the applications folder,
but in the System Preferences.

[FCP-L] Anyone install Perian ?

I did. It didn't make it possible to view .flv's in QuickTime but it did enable MPEG Stream Clip to do so. There is supposed to be a perian components file in the QuickTime main library but there is nothing. Perian also seems to have an effect on the icons for flv's turning them into a document icon instead of the little brown film clip icon I have come to know flv's by. Even flv's saved to external drives from other computers show as a document icon when that drive is mounted in my computer. It's just weird. I have removed Perian as per the instructions but the icons are still showing as documents. In my searching the web to solve this issue I have come across numerous blurbs regarding Perian and FCP. Anybody have personal experience with this? Can any one tell my what's going on with the icon changing thing?

Re: [FCP-L] Re: New tech from Silverado - take a guess...

The scope will not function with ANY monitor that will not display 1920x1200. I just tried a Samsung LCD 24" that had a max
resolution of 1920x1080, and IT WOULD NOT EVEN LAUNCH THE APPLICATION - I put on an Apple Cinema display for 1920x1200, and
it opened instantly.

Jeff,
If I walked into a production truck on a professional remote and saw an UltraScope I would hang the tech manager for a good flogging. Editing at home it makes sense for lower end stuff but really a production truck not really the place for this unit IMHO. Not to mention the scope needs a pretty big monitor to work correctly.

Re: [FCP-L] New tech from Silverado - take a guess...

Bob I didn't make the comparison and say it was more elegant. For someone else to say that it is sparked my curiousity as to what is more elegant about a minimal interface GUI compared to a dedicated panel of buttons.... with more features. I got my answer, it's not. Always open to learning something I don't know. Remember it's what you learn after you know it all that counts.

Has much changed since then in terms of modifying the various displays? To my knowledge the scope has no error log function which I've used on the leader, albeit a bit too sensitive on the unit I was on. The folks at leader said they might have addressed the error log sensitivity in later versions of the scope software but I never had a chance to check that. As far as day to day operation I'll take a panel with buttons over a software interface any day of the week. I assume you have to go into a GUI to change settings on the UltraScope. How do you switch inputs on the UltraScope or can you? On the leader it's a push of a button. You'd really have to get specific about your hybrid UltraScope being more elegant than the leader or any other dedicated scope unit. Cost obviously is the most elegant feature I see. ;-)

Is that 2K including the price of the Ultrascope itself? Or is that just for the rackmount computer, video card and Monitor?

Bob,

Completely jammed up here today for totally unrelated issues.

It will be on the site sometime this weekend--I want to take more time to develop the info for the page.

It will cost more than $2000, but I don't think that much more.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: New tech from Silverado - take a guess...

Bob:

I'm sure Torrey will do a fine job on this.

If it's too costly, there are many cheap rack-mount cases out there --
sadly the Ultrascope appears to be a short but full height card, so
you won't fit into an elegant 2U space cheaply. Simple trade -- price
for rack space.

The people who will want a 2U unit most are trucks and others who have
to fit a lot into a small space.

Looks like a great product, but I am in the film scanning world these
days, and HD is below the resolution radar.

Good thing we work in video. Fu*k audio I say.

I'd be curious to see some footage from the Sanyo. I'll check those
models out.

The problem with the Canon and Sony models we have looked at is they
output the kind of MPEG files that seem to work on Windows/Premiere,
but FCP/Premiere/etc on Mac cannot see the audio.

Thanks,

James

Re: [FCP-L] New tech from Silverado - take a guess...

This is a rediculous post - comparing a $660 card to a $7000 scope. OF course it doesn't have all these functions.
This is 2009 - cost is the ONLY feature anyone cares about.

I'll admidt I haven't spent a lot of time checking out the Ultra Scope, but the display customization was limited or non existent on the model I looked at last NAB. Cost obviously is the most elegant feature I see. ;-)

It's 6pm eastern time - the price, or the product is not on the Silverado

costs more than $2000, I am not interested.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Differing video levels on camera monitor and captured video

Hey Kerry,
The first thing I do when shooting talent with monitors is to bring
down the brightness on the monitors. Otherwise you end up with
underexposed talent. This could be why the chroma looks off. Without
bringing down the brightness on the monitors they would need a few
HMIs to ballance it out

Re: [FCP-L] Quicktime export time code conundrum

Hi Rainer,

It may not be that you are missing something. It may be that I didn't
express myself well.

What I mean to say is that playing down the rendered ProRes 422 HQ timeline
looks great when editing to tape. However, when exporting to a ProRes 422 HQ
Quicktime movie from the timeline, importing the movie into the Browser and
attempting to edit the QT movie directly to tape, it doesn't. I thought that
it ought to look the same. Am I mistaken? Or might I be doing something
wrong?

Does that help?

RE: [FCP-L] anyone used disc repair apps with Fibrejet?

No problem, I understand if you are having problems and need a ongoing solution. Keep in mind though that "any" utility which diddles with the Partition and the bit map or file allocation table of a disk has the potential of disaster via making the disk unreadable. Since the Mac OS X file system is a cached file system any crashes of Apps and the OS certainly creates a situation of lost files or corrupted File allocation tables.

In my experience ongoing Disk issues need to be tracked down and addressed before valuable data may be lost. In some cases all it takes is a OS X restore.

When they create a error and crash-proof drive I will agree with you. Until then disk warrior will continue to be within arm's reach.

RE: [FCP-L] anyone used disc repair apps with Fibrejet?

My only point was running Disk Warrior or any other Disk Repair utility should not be needed...

Wyler,

I think you are being a bit argumentative. I found Brian's advice very helpful. In fact, I just fixed my drives based on his workflow.
So a big tip of the hat to Brian. He just saved me a tech service visit.

Re: [FCP-L] Cheap SD tapeless FCP compatible videocam?

I'd be curious to see some footage from the Sanyo. I'll check those
models out.

The problem with the Canon and Sony models we have looked at is they
output the kind of MPEG files that seem to work on Windows/Premiere,
but FCP/Premiere/etc on Mac cannot see the audio.

Thanks,

James
