I'm looking to sell my Sony 14" CRT PVM-14L5 (1080psf24 capable) with
the optional HD-SDI card if anyone is interested...

Re: [FCP-L] Add an effect layer to a sequence!

And if it's something like a timecode-burn it can be achieved with an
imported still frame cropped to the right degree... No need to nest.

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

As much as I prefer a more robust scope than the Ultra it is a real scope for looking at important parade display and vector scope basics. The in monitor waveform is nothing compared to the Ultra. It's a poor mans in the field rough guide at best.

Re: [FCP-L] "Master clip not present" annoyance

You can drag all the clips from the sequence to the browser and it will create new master clips, assuming this is v7.

All the best,

Tom

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

I don't think I'd trust the scopes on a monitor. Not quite up to the
snuff of the real deal.

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

Seems like if you are putting a room together and had a budget line
for an ultra scope set up (which when said and done runs about 2700),
you are better off getting one of these monitors which has a simple
set of scopes included. You get the HD monitor and a wave/vector set
up in one swoop. No?

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

Yeah to see which monitors suck less. Do you know how many matched Coax cables I had to make for that in the interest of fairness. I know it's SDI but back in the analogue days, cue banjo, you had to have matched cables to compare monitors fairly. Of course this was after walking through the snow uphill to the Editors' Lounge. ;-)

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

I have seen the 2550s, and they are TONS better than the original
panels. But I still think the FSI is a better monitor. I haven't
seen them side by side to compare, but going by memory.

Hey Terry...time for the Editor's Lounge to do another MONITOR
SHOOTOUT...

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm offering another alternative. Bang for buck
is pretty amorphous, and "capable of 1080" could also mean different things.
For some people, 1:1 mapping is more important than it is to others.

But have you used the LH2550? If not, then I don't know if you can say the
FSI is better than Panasonic models. Perhaps it's better than some, but not
necessarily all. The LH2550 appeared to be significantly better than the
Panasonic LCDs from two-three years ago.

Anyway, I figure we're all just recommending a list of monitors for Nigel to
view. I don't think he's going to buy blind. But then, if he was blind he'd
probably be satisfied with a much less expensive monitor...

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

I haven't seen this round of Panasonic Monitors yet but it would have to be a lot better than the ones I saw a couple years ago, don't remember the model number. They became popular because they supported a lot of different formats and had a crude waveform but the picture just blew. For people to be suggesting these new Pannys must mean they are really a step up from a couple years ago. Can somebody confirm this?

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

1:1 mapping isn't CRUCIAL. And I stand by this monitor being better
than the Panasonic models. But the one you mention is higher priced
than the one I mentioned. if you want a good comparison, then I'd
look at the FSI 2450W. That IS 1:1 pixel mapping for 1080i signals,
and around $5000.

The question was bang for the buck, and I think that the 1760W at
$2500 is a great deal.

Re: [FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

That FSI monitor has 1366x768 resolution.

I just worked with a Panasonic BT-LH2550 26ish-inch LCD that has 1920x1080
one-to-one pixel mapping. Looked good. WFM and scope were bigger and higher
resolution than on some older Panasonics that I've seen. However, this was
on a stage, not in post. The DP seemed happy, but I was focusing on
somehting else. We didn't look at SD images. $5000.

I think someone else on FCP-L or Avid-L2 tried and liked that monitor.

HTH at least a little,

Jim

[FCP-L] Broadcast Monitor

I know this has been covered before but I don't have my computer in
front of me. What's the best bang for your buck HD/SD switchable
broadcast monitor capable of 1080 on the market at the moment? There's
a Panasonic that's apparently really good but for the life of me I
can't remember the model number.

Thanks in advance

Re: [FCP-L] Add an effect layer to a sequence!

Although that is not a bad idea, one has to be careful of clips with more
than one effect. The order of effects may affect the final look. For
instance, if you are going to use a Widescreen Matte, you probably want that
to be last so that if you apply any color correction, it doesn't affect the
black matte.

It also becomes more of a hassle if you want to change the effect. If you
add your Vignette to a clip with other filters and paste it onto clips with
other filters, what do you do if you want to change the Vignette? You will
have to manually go to each clip to remove or modify the outdated effect.

Re: [FCP-L] Add an effect layer to a sequence!

If all you need is a vignette, then you can simply make it in Photoshop and superimpose it. Either via an alpha or b/w, composited via "Darken". Or even just use a Gradient generator directly in FCP the same way.

Or, if you don't have a massive amount of V-tracks, set the filter up for one and apply it to the rest (e.g. as a favorite)... in which case you should of course be sure you won't be changing it again. :) (which is why the first option is surely the better)

A NEST is not the way you want to go IMO, either way, since they tend to want to render and/or drop frames and also adds an extra level of annoying UN-transparency to fiddle with.

Re: [FCP-L] Add an effect layer to a sequence!

You could also apply effect to one clip and copy, paste attributes
(filters) to all the rest. Just depends on how complicated your
sequences is.

Re: [FCP-L] Add an effect layer to a sequence!

The nested sequence should always update the final.

I just finished a half hour show, the center 20 minutes of which, was a
nested sequence. Whenever I lengthened or shortened the original, the final
show rippled to reflect those changes.

Just remember that when you want to open the nested sequence in the Viewer,
you need to right-click it. If you double-click, it will open in the
timeline.
