[FCP-L] Re: OT: Anybody want ten thousand used IMX tapes?

I think I might just use them as bricks and build a retaining wall in my back yard.

Did I mention we've got lot's of Beta SP stock also?

I feel like a typewriter salesman after people discovered word processors!

You'll have to find a sculptor then :-)

They could build a giant bull out of it and call it "Journey to the Oxcide" ... they could film themselves building it (on IMX tape) and then add that tape to the sculpture without ever having shown it ... it would be a powerful artistic statement and it would sell for millions.

Or not ... maybe that tax break thing is the way to go.

[FCP-L] 10-bit Gradient test image with 1024 code values

hi List!

does anyone know where I can get a test image with a 10-bit gradient that
includes 1024 values (ideally across an image 1024px wide)? I'd like an
image that I can pass trough a pipeline and make sure all 10-bits of color
data are being preserved.

I tried to create this in photoshop, but none of the blending modes create
an image whose code values increase linearly. Maybe theres an easy way to
do this in photoshop that I don't know about.

Thanks!

Wes,
Your in luck. At the Laurel Canyon 101 on ramp I just saw a guy with a sign, "Will Transcribe for Food." I'll bet he'd come to your home. I might suggest he work in an open area with plenty of ventilation. I'd appreciate you using this guy so I can get his spot on the on ramp. I've already got my sandwich board, "Will Edit for Food." ;-)

Thank you for the recommendation. I frankly don't care where the person
transcribing is located, it just so happens that this project has zero
budget and I want to play with ScriptSync so the money is coming out of my
pocket. No, I don't have time to transcribe it myself.

Wes,

Here a link to a company that we use in the UK:

http://www.take1.tv/

They're NOT the cheapest, but they are very good and reliable, with
internet based up & downloading so it really doesn't matter where they
are. Timezone is an advantage for us.

By the way, we're HEAVY consumers of transcription services, spending
thousands of dollars on hundreds of hours of interviews. We use
multiple vendors to spread out the
load, and we've found that they're all within a certain price range.
You can search the world for a "bargain" but the amount of time
invested in getting that bargain may end up costing you more in the
long run.

In this area, I feel that you really do get what you pay for.

We also use: www.pilotware.com In addition to their logging
software, they now have a transcription department as well.

Good luck.

[FCP-L] Looking for budget transcription

I've found Steve Hullfish's article on PVC* to be quite helpful, but now I'm
trying to learn more about what the cheaper overseas options really are and
how they compare with people here in the states. Especially compared to the
service that I've called three times now and they've not returned my call.

Anyone have experience with and recommendations for less expensive
transcription services?

Re: [FCP-L] QMaster - The lurking mystery within FCS

As has been mentioned you have to disable QMaster to send to
Compressor from a FCP sequence. But that does not mean that you only
get one core from FCP in this scenario.

If you look at Activity Monitor while sending to Compressor from a
Sequence with QMaster disabled versus QT file in Compressor with
QMaster enabled you will see that there are differences between
different codecs in how many cores are used and how efficiently those
cores are used.

MPEG2 seems to be the most efficient with QMaster disabled using the
equivalent of 2-3 cores out of 4 on my system. H.264 closer to 2 out
of 4.

First way isn't possible. It's detailed in an Apple support note
somewhere that it will fail when submitted from FCP to a virtual

Larry Applegate of Rivergate Software will teach a free all-day Blu-
ray Authoring Class at Silverado Systems, the premiere Apple VAR in

you can distribute or publish your work by duplication and replication.

Much of the material for these classes is taken from the book Fast
Path to Blu-ray for Mac with the blessing of its author Bruce
Nazarian, who is also President of the IDMA (International Digital
Media Alliance). Copies of the book will be available for purchase at
the classes.

Here is the class schedule:

10 a.m. Making Blu-ray in Final Cut Pro 7
11 a.m. Blu-ray Video with Toast 10.4
12 a.m. Lunch offsite nearby
1 p.m. Making Blu-ray in Adobe Encore CS4
2 p.m. Publishing Blu-ray with BluStreak Premaster
3 p.m. Wrap up and general discussion

There is no charge to attend the class. Hosted in Silverado's new 5000
