Re: [FCP-L] Semi-OT: Squeeze v. Episode

At Cartoon Network Asia Pacific, we use both - Squeeze is ok - confined to Avid suites. Episode on FCP. I find Episode easier to work with. Plus, the main reason I got it, I can batch process .mxf files. It does a decent job of transcoding etc. Interface is nicer - to me. It's from Telestream so has great track record.

hope this helps.

I'm looking at all my options for h.264, FLV and WMV encoding going into
2010 and wanted to know if anyone wanted to make an especially strong case
for one over the other in terms of quality, speed, integration, etc.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

Zev,
I just recently got taught this one after having the same struggle
you're having:
Just put markers at each still, which I think you can name, too. Just
hit m to set the marker and m again to open the naming dialog.
When you've got a clip with all the markers you need, drag it to the
browser where it should show up with a triangle.
I'm not sure you have to do this next step, but I use it. Make a new
bin, which I name something like Export stills.
Back to the clip in the browser, reveal the markers by twirling the
reveal triangle.
Select all the markers and drag them to the Export bin.
Select them and control click to get the contextual menu with 'batch
export'. They show up in the browser in an "Export Queue."
Use the dialog to specify the destination folder and the file format
you want to create.
Then I use the 'Export' button at the bottom of the browser.
The stills should be in the folder in Finder.

There is Photoshop CS4 portable. I've had a couple of people tell me they are running it, but after googling it, I'm not so sure it's legal, but it is everywhere.

Am I the last person to find out about "portable" applications? I recently
learned that there are many programs available that can be run off of USB
flash drives, enabling one to take their favorite applications with them.

As a free-lancer, I find that many of my clients don't have the applications
available on their systems that I have become accustomed to using. It's not
a problem if I can download the application and install it myself (like my
browser of choice, Firefox), but at large companies with IT departments that
can be reluctant to install new applications, it can be.

So I now travel with a USB flash drive with a variety of programs on it. I
like to call it my "computer on a stick". These are, by and large, open
source programs that I carry like Firefox, Filezilla, GIMP, Inkscape, Open
Office, Celtx, NVU. The preferences are all saved on the stick so you are
leaving nothing behind on the host computer.

Is anyone else on the list taking advantage of this capability? If so, what
are your favorite apps?

Richard, you're shooting HDV mate, I think D/A and A/D conversions are the least of your worries at this point. Still, you might want to consider picking up a good HDV deck with better I/O options.

I'd imagine its likely but with Apple theres never any guarantee and I would not be inclined to make production decisions based on what Apple may or may not do at some indeterminable point in the future

Just a thought

[FCP-L] Re: HDV - ProRes LT capture via firewire

I have an AJA ioHD but wouldn¹t that involve a D/A conversion to go from the
component out of the camera and then a second A/D conversion inside of the
ioHD to get into FCP)? My camera doesn¹t have an HD-SDI connection.

That¹s two conversions before I even start editing. That is not what I want.

FCP¹s current HDV to Prores 422 via firewire capture in FCP stays entirely
digital, if I¹m not mistaken. There is no A/D or D/A conversions. That is
what I want to do but with ProRes LT via firewire capture.

I can use HDV to Prores 422 capture or I can capture HDV natively and
export/render to ProRes LT inside of FCP for now.

Since ProRes LT is available as an option inside of the Log and Transfer
window, perhaps Apple will make this possible in an update for FCP as HDV to
ProRes LT via firewire capture.

Thanks,
