[FCP-L] The Fantastic Mr Fox

"The Fantastic Mr Fox" shot entirely on 24 X Cannon and Nikon and a
few other brand DSLR's, the Director had access to all feeds live,
where ever in the world he was.

There is a tidal wave out there, that has just left the shores of
Japan, hope we all know how to swim.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT LG TruMotion 480Mhz LCD TV, etc??

Then there's what happens to broadcast television when the cable or
satellite service providers take in the signal (which can often be via
a very clean, high-bandwidth direct fiber or microwave link from the
broadcaster) and do data reduction or bandwidth limiting on the
broadcaster's signal in order to squeeze more channels into a fixed
amount of bandwidth going to homes.

My dear Verne:

Broadcast TV has less data bandwidth than a Blu-ray disc. It is also
broadcast in the air, which adds lots of noise and possible
interference to the signal. Corrective data is provided in order to
mask some of these problems. If you are receiving a weak signal or
multipath, the TV must work harder to mask the additional errors. But
those errors may not be completely masked; there may be artifacts left.
Of course, additional data devoted to correcting errors also takes up
bandwidth that otherwise would be used to produce a better picture.
Another big difference is that the bandwidth that IS available for
broadcasting is shared with other additional services. WPIX Channel 11
for example is carrying a subchannel (11.2) called "LATV" which uses
about 1.5MHz of the available 19.3MHz bandwidth. OTOH, Blu-ray can
devote more of its available bandwidth to making high-quality pictures
and sound.
Finally, the type of compression used for each system may differ and
that can have a big effect on the quality of the picture. Blu-ray can
use either MPEG-2 or H.264. Broadcast TV (ATSC) can only use MPEG-2, a
less-efficient compression codec than H.264. If your Blu-ray disc uses
H.264 (which is most likely as it's the most common Blu-ray codec),
that fact alone can provide better results when compared to MPEG-2,
based on an equal data bandwidth available for video. This is because
H.264 is much more efficient at coding and decoding a high-quality
picture than MPEG-2 is. You really can't make a fair comparison
between broadcast DTV and any Blu-ray disc.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: LG TruMotion 480Mhz LCD TV, etc??

EXACTLY! Why the manufacturers think that making FILM look like VIDEO
is GOOD...is beyond me. And all the sales reps think the same. It
doesn't. I saw TRANSFORMERS playing in Circuit City and they said the
TV was specially enhanced...and I thought it looked like CRAP. I told
them so. If I wanted to watch video...I'd watch video. If the film
makers wanted the film to look like video, they would have shot video.

I have a 720p Progressive TV and love it.

Re: [FCP-L] LG TruMotion 480Mhz LCD TV, etc??

Ah, I thought they were trying to smooth the "awkward 3:2 pulldown
process" and somehow make 24p look more like 24p, or whatever.

So, 120Hz (Thanks Dennis!) is the next bad thing.

Can I assume you can turn this functionality off -- since I imagine it
will be on all consumer TV sets eventually.

Re: [FCP-L] LG TruMotion 480Mhz LCD TV, etc??

What some folk forget about film is that even though it may be 24fps,
we get the impression of a smoother presentation in a cinema because
of the shutter in the projector revealing and concealing each frame
twice, giving an apparent rate of 48fps. I really hate 24 or 25
progressive on TV sets - Interlace Rules OK!

Gizmodo had a story a few a few weeks ago about 240 Hz scanning. On some sets, the higher scanning "desegregates" the picture, causing worse performance than 120 Hz:

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT LG TruMotion 480Mhz LCD TV, etc??

No matter what Hz (we have a 120Hz Sony LCD) set you might have, the compression artifacts that I sometimes see during sports off my cable system is (are?) extremely annoying.

Thanksgiving Day Channel 11 here in NY broadcast the NFL Network production of the Giants/Broncos game had artifacts in what seemed to be every transition.  Maybe it was because of the rebroadcast

Blu-ray looks spectacular, but sports can sometimes be dodgy, through no fault of the set.

Amen.

This 240hz TV thing is just a new hype. The market is saturated so
they had to come with something new so the meatbrains (90% of the
world's population) will be convinced they need to replace their
current flatscreen by a new one in order to survive.

I still watch my TV on a conventional widescreen Philips and trust
me... a shitty movie looks like poo on any kind of TV.

Eww. I can't even bear to watch 25fps film material on a friend's 50Hz TV, let alone 120 or 240!
