[FCP-L] Re: Export still image from sequence?

If that is true Rieni, then you have only yourself to blame for not researching more thoroughly.

Re: [FCP-L] OT Compressor Strip CC

Of course, my reply was all based on SD. I don't know how that might apply
to HD.

I was told by engineers at our local PBS station, that HD captioning doesn't
make it through the FCP process. But they are still on FCP 6 since many of
their systems are still PPC-based. Perhaps I misunderstood them. Or maybe
I'm not understanding you.

Looks really nice Eddie, should give the similarly priced Matrox MXO2 LE and AJA Io Express a very good run for the money.

Re: [FCP-L] OT Compressor Strip CC

When you export in FCP vs compressor, you can choose to have the file
use your current sequence settings or you can choose to have it re-
compress every frame in the sequence when you export. All of our show
exports go through Captioning and the file is re-embedded with new
captions. The problem we have had in the past if we use previously
captioned flattened show files as elements in a new show, the
captioning can cause a problem when they get redone. The new
captioning won't stick or there is some corruption from using the old
captioned file as an element. So stripping or removing the captioning
before putting them into the new sequence will help save time on the
renders as I can then just use current sequence settings vs. re-
rendering every frame. I'm interested in seeing what FCP 7 offers on
the captioning front, but Apples articles or instructions in the
manual are pretty thin. Since most of our edit stations are still
thumping away on 6.0.6, FCP 7 is still a glimmer in the future. Hope
this makes a little more sense.

Re: [FCP-L] OT Compressor Strip CC

By recompress is that a compressor function or internal in FCP. I'm mostly on Avid so sometimes my terminology for FCP is off. How do you set it to strip HD Captioning since it's in the anc. metadata on line 9 in the vertical interval? I'm guessing this might be part of the new Captioning functionality in FCP7/Kona 3 I've heard about.

Re: [FCP-L] OT Compressor Strip CC

John,

On the HD side of things: Yes, the longer renders come from having to
recompress all frames to remove the previous captions vs. just
exporting a dvcprohd sequence with current settings. It ads an
additional 30+ mintues to the render.

Sent from my fruit phone.

Re: [FCP-L] OT Compressor Strip CC

Just curious how the presence of captioning SD style makes for longer renders? Is it that the necessary effect to remove the captioning is what creates the longer renders. Since SD captioning is just a line of blips of white on line 21 I don't see why that requires extra rendering time unless it's the removal process.

Re: [FCP-L] OT Compressor Strip CC

Thanks for the details Kerry. It is all HD. A show I am now working
on uses flattened air masters files for look back elements of previous
shows. They come with the captioning that makes for longer renders
when outputting the new master. I have to recompress all frames to
remove the captioning in each episode.

Maybe I'll just grab the terrabyte of files and batch export them all
over the turkey day holiday from fcp.

Re: [FCP-L] Question about color correction

In FCP, look at the scopes - internal if you have to - and spread the
tonal range (black to white) so that your blacks go all the way down
to 0 and your whites go all the way to 100. Then, with the color wheel
in either the regular color corrector filter or the 3 way color
corrector, slowly push the center of the scope towards magenta (up and
to the right, about 2 or 3 o'clock on a clock face). Problem solved.
Now you don't have to buy my book.

Do NOT use a blue filter.

Re: [FCP-L] OT Compressor Strip CC

When you say "strip", do you mean "remove"?

Is this an SD or HD program?

When I have had to re-edit closed captioned SD programs but maintain the
closed captioning, I found that if I overlay the original video with a
bottom crop of 99.5 (which I believe is in %), it will allow me to preserve
the captioning. The inverse of that would be a top crop of .5 (1/2 of 1%),
if I wanted to remove it.

Consequently, I'm thinking that, you could crop the top 2 or 3 lines of
video in Compressor in order to delete the captioning. Of course you are
then left with a non-standard size frame. I wouldn't resize to full height
because you will create all sort of unnecessary artifacts. Of course, if you
are starting with 486 lines, you could crop 4 lines off of the top and 2
lines off of the bottom, creating a standard 720 x 480 frame. And by
eliminating even numbers of lines at the top and the bottom, you won't be
changing the field order.

Re: [FCP-L] Question about color correction

If this is a balance problem throughout (like poor white balance) it should be easily remedied with the 3 way color correction tool.

Read both of Steve Hullfish's books, especially the second one, "The Art of Digital Ciolor Correction" Its an incredible educational tool on the subject and I highly recommend it.

I have a lot of footage shot with a Canon HDV camcorder XH A1 which

has a dirty, greenish color (partly because most was shot with

fluorescent lights, some camcorder chips seem to have a problem with

this). When I export a still and import in Photoshop and use a blue

colored photo filter with 25% opacity, the image looks much better.

Now I want to duplicate this in FCP to improve the video image.

Should I export the blue filter from Photoshop and import that into

the FCP project and add as a layer on top of the videoclips in the

sequence, give 25% opacity, of would this not make any sense at all,

or are there FCP built-in filters which achieve the same result?

I don't want to make the image more blue, because that is not what a

Photoshop photo filter does, it rather changes the balance between

the red, green and blue.

Any suggestions about books or DVDs for color correction self

studying are very welcome.

Thanks,

Rieni

Re: [FCP-L] New MOTU Video Capture System

I didn't want to get too 'spammy' here... but since you asked... there
is a PCIe version and (the first I know of) ExpressCard34 version (so
you need a 'Pro' Apple Computer- either a Mac Book Pro 17" or a Mac Pro)

List Price is $895- we'll probably be selling it here for $849. The
web team here is adding it to our webstore sometime this week I think...

http://imsproav.com/

For those of you who don't know MOTU, they have been making primarily
Mac-Centric audio and MIDI hardware since 1984- their products are top
notch and they are known for their excellent driver development. I
personally own a MOTU Ultralite for audio and it's one of the best
bargains in the audio industry...

[FCP-L] Sanyo Xacti and iFrame

The reason I have not uploaded footage is because the one I bought does
not seem to support it and I have been looking into why.

It appears that if you want this functionality it will only be in the
HD2000A (note the A for Apple) and will only be sold through Apple
outlets.

Looks like I peaked a little early.

The footage I shot imports automatically into iMovie and gets converted
to Intermediate 960x540.

I guess the 2000A will effectively shoot AIC 960x540 but I am guessing

[FCP-L] Transcription and Avid's ScriptSync

A couple of weeks ago I was asking the list for transcriptionist
recommendations, here's a little blog post that came out of that
experience...

Re: [FCP-L] Export still image from sequence?

By the way, being able to export stills more easily was one of my
reasons to upgrade from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro. I was
really expecting to find a "export frame as still" shortcut in the
Pro interface lol

Re: [FCP-L] Export still image from sequence?

ok, i just had to do this half an hour ago,
so i tried something new for me,
and it worked pretty well.

luckily i had to make stills from a single clip of a captured movie.
so in the viewer, i marked up frames i liked.

then i made a new bin,
toggled the marked clip to reveal the markers,
and dragged them into the new bin.
(where they become subclips parked on the first frame, which is the
frame i marked)

then i selected the bin and made a Batch Export as still images
all the stills had names like Marker 1 from "clip name".psd
but a couple of passes though R-name (any renaming app will do)
and they were tidied up.

Rainers app looks very good, (and has some other functions)
but this seemed just as simple, other than the re-naming.

you are using sequences, not clips.
but if they are rendered,
you can export as NON self contained and DON'T include sound.
the exports will be lightning fast,
and you can make you stills from those exports.

[FCP-L] Question about color correction

Thanks,

Rieni

Re: [FCP-L] Export still image from sequence?

Everybody thanks for the answers, I will try each suggestion and see
what works best.

I never need to make a lot of stills, mabe one or two of each 5
minutes of sequence but the routine of going through the menu all the
time gets boring and time-consuming as it's usual an end of the day
job and my bed is calling me lol
