[FCP-L] 2 TB on eSata?

I'm looking to buy a 2TB raid drive and an eSata card for my early
2006 Mac Pro. Does anyone have this configuration working with Snow
Leopard that they are happy with?

I have yet to purchase an inexpensive eSata card. I've read on forums
the Dynex 2-Port eSATA II and the Sonnet equivalent are possibilities.

As far as the drives go, I was thinking the regular G-RAID or OWC Mercury RAID.

just wondering if someone has an exact configuration like this?. Or
any thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks!

Tudor

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Mac Pro 8 Core - Speed Question

FWIW, not that I'm any kind of authority, but a couple of months ago I
purchased a refurbed 8-core with the 3.2GHz processors, 2GB ram
upgraded to 3rd party 16GB and it screams when it comes to Compressor,
particularly using a Qmaster Cluster. (I will jump to 32GB after I
get my MXO2.) I don't know benchmarks, but I've been very pleased.

[FCP-L] Re: Mac Pro 8 Core - Speed Question

We ended up going with the 8 cores because we are doing a fair amount of Red work. It makes a big difference if you are making your own dailies.

Also, we ended up putting 12GB of RAM because I read (on barefeats.com i think) that the Octos run faster with three of the four slots in each bank filled instead of all four being filled. Incidentally, that may affect your decision as well. The Quad core has 4 RAM slots, while the Octo has 8.

I think the top end 4-core is pretty similar when you price it out to the bottom 8-core. Also in performance. Right now you probably won't see much difference, but the development is clearly toward taking advantage of more cores. I opted for the bottom 8-core, not so much for now, but for a year or two down the road. That's banking on software evolving to take advantage of this.

Man that's like saying, "I'm hoping to turn my head and cough, the next time I go to the doctor." Or better yet, "I can't wait to turn 50 so I can get that roto rooter procedure." Unfortunately all these things are inevitable even tapeless workflows. Uggg.

Craig,
I'm stuck in tape for at least this iteration because I regularly need
to deliver dv on mini-dv tape for a major client, but thanks for the
pointer. I'm hoping for tapeless later in this lifetime.

While we're on the topic, since I'm planning on buying one this week,
should I bother with the 8 cores or just go with the slightly slower
processor 4 core and save a bunch of cash. I'm planning on getting the
best video card for Color, AJA Kona 3 and all the RAM it can handle
(3rd party of course).

Sorry, but welcome to reality. Some media is better because it is better optimized for the Intels. I tend to agree that the differnce isn't as great at the processing speed difference might lead you to believe. I say that from the perspective of having both types of machines. I think if you actually benchmarked these, renders and encodes are faster, but not by as much as we would all like.

Timeline seems faster, but everythig else seems the same as our Core 2 Duo machines. (i.e.: exports, renders, etc.)

Thanks!

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Considering Canon XH-A1s. Any reviews? Used?

We really like the Sony Z7U with the CF card recorder. We can shoot
DV or HDV. (or both if we shoot HDV to tape and DV on the CF cards) It
was a great replacement for our Z1U.

[FCP-L] Re: Considering Canon XH-A1s. Any reviews? Used?

I would not buy into tape based technology at this point.

Consider JVC-HM100 or an equivalent camera from Panasonic (don't recall the model number offhand).

I won't get into tape vs file at this point but the "market" and the manufacturers are speaking loud and clear on this from consumer on up to professional.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Considering Canon XH-A1s. Any reviews? Used?

Those Canons have HD-SDI and/or HDMI, right?

Obviously a school can't handle huge outlays of capital, but if you
want your current cameras to move into the file-based digital realm,
check out AJA's KiPro. I have one at the moment and it records the
"camera out" video signals (HD-SDI, SDI, HDMI, analog Component,
analog audio), turning them into ProRes and ProRes HD files in the
field. No need to mess with long-GOP or digitizing later from tape.
Plus, since the signal is recorded pre-compression, it's a better
looking signal than the camera tape itself. Or, barring that, Adobe
OnLocation running on a laptop can do the same thing if the camera
output is Firewire. The unit sits in a little protected cage on top of
the tripod and under the camera, or somewhere else. It can be battery
powered or AC. It records to a FireWire 800 drive which pops out of
the unit to be used directly by the editing system or transferred to a
RAID connected to the editing system.

[FCP-L] Re: Considering Canon XH-A1s. Any reviews? Used?

Doug -

We have 15 of the Canons at the school I teach classes at. While it makes a nice picture, HDV is still a pain format to deal with. I would much rather go to a file based acquisition model, but for student work, the tape based flow is best at this point. Our emphasis is on concept development and execution, rather than making our students DP's and editors...its a graduate advertising program.

The Canon is a pretty rugged and has enough ways to turn off the "auto" features, which I always have my students avoid. Note that the LCD monitor on the XHA-1 is nice but shows brighter than what is actually being recorded. You can put zebras on the monitor and set those to your liking, so at least you can tell where the whites are. You do have XLR's and a good BNC second output. All in all, a solid "pro-sumer" camera.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Re: [FCP-L] Glyph Portagig hard drive

I have a couple of drives where I use a twin USB-2 cable- one (Blue)
draws the power and he other (Green) is for data. These drives won't
spin up with just one cable.

I had a vendor send me a Glyph Portagig hard drive last week with video
files on it. It is buss-powered so he didn't provide me with the
optional
external power supply. At the office, on a five-year old G5, I was
unable to
read any data, although the System Profiler saw that there was a drive
attached. This was the case with both the FW 800 and USB 2 connections.

So I took the drive home to test it on my recent generation Intel
iMac. In
this case, the System Profiler wouldn't see the driver, however, if I
hooked
up BOTH the FW 800 and USB 2 ports, it seemed like there was enough
power to
access the drive. Although the Profiler didn't see it, I was able to
view it
on the Desktop and access the necessary files, to a degree.

It would copy for several minutes and then stop giving me an error
message
that I disconnected the hard drive. Then it would reappear and continue
copying. In the end, I chose to transfer a few files, eject and
disconnect
the hard drive allowing it to cool down, and then reconnect and
repeat. In
the end I was able to retrieve all of my data but I was wondering if
anybody
else has had a similar experience.

I assume that there was just not enough power getting to the drive to
operate reliably and I have asked for the power supply in order to
test my
theory. Am I missing something?

[FCP-L] Re: Glyph Portagig hard drive

Kerry, I'm using the same drive with my MacBookPro early 2008. We've had no power issues at all. We're suing firewire. No disconnects. Periodically when copying files it'll hang with a message implying a corrupt file. Rebooting and copying again works though so I'm not sure of the cause but I don't see any power issues.

[FCP-L] Re: Glyph Portagig hard drive

I think it's either a bad power supply or a faulty bridge chipset. I'd be worried that the spontaneous disconnects will eventually corrupt the data or result in mechanical damage.

I've had this happen a couple of times. #1: I kept trying to copy as many files as it would let me before disconneting and also run repair utilities on the drive. In short order the drive stopped working altogether. The drive never worked again, even in a different case. #2: As soon as the problem started, I pulled the hard drive out of the case and plugged it into one of those "caseless" USB connection rigs. The drive worked perfectly and all the data was saved.

Good luck -- Mark

well, the title does say "the horribly slow" murder etc...(so it
fulfills that at least) - murder by movie trailer
but yeah I found I couldn't watch the whole thing through without
clicking ahead many times thereby condensing it into a much quicker

[FCP-L] Differing video levels on camera monitor and captured video

I received a couple of tapes last week from a shooter of a host in front of
a bank of television monitors. This was standard def, shot on miniDV.
Although tape playback looked beautiful on the camera LCD, the video, when
captured, of the skin tones where very low. So low, in fact, that when
raising the gamma and chroma, the face lost most of its detail.

I realize that data is data and that the video looked the same no matter
what camera it was played back on. Could it be that the television monitors
in the background were so bright that the ratio of the image was correct but
the camera LCD displays a wider range?

Thanks,
Kerry
