[FCP-L] Re: HDV Question

Quote "I actually have 2 iPhones hooked together to give me dual monitor editing just like the pros use."
What a laugh! And there was me thinking we were Pros with dual 26" screens on MacPros FCPs and Avids.....

Oh and yes you can technically lay back to HDV but anyone who knows the technical limitations of re compressing a fixed length GOP. Will be aware of the likely hood of cuts occurring between I frames and the damage the resulting frames will suffer till the next I frame. Possibly as much as 10 frames of damaged material.
HDV is suitable for acquisition. But that's all.
Layback to implies there is no regard for the quality. SO why even bother in the first place.
Output as a file (ideally framebased codec) and transfer it that way.

Re: [FCP-L] how do I convert Microsoft DV AVI files to a Mac?

David is right. MPEG Streamclip is the best bet. Convert the source to Quicktime once and save re-rendering later.

not so much with the possible there. Either she can have proprietary
edit system codec AVIs (PC) or fairly proprietary codec QT files (Mac).

Conversion would always be necessary.

Yes I would convert them using MPEG Streamclip on the Mac to the codec
of your choice. FCP should be much happier with a Quicktime wrapper.

Re: [FCP-L] how do I convert Microsoft DV AVI files to a Mac?

Greetings:
I appreciate the input regarding the question of converting avi's for use in Final Cut...

what is your experience when you have placed avi's on timeline in FC without conversion ?
the files that I am dealing with are widescreen DV and 4:3 , Standard Def..

on my initial query, I assumed that the avi's had to be converted, hence my request for converters; but I heard from an editor who said avi's are not a problem in FC even if QT puts a "bogus" warning.. but then another editor said avi's are not happy with Final Cut or QT ? I remain uncertain..

Ultimately, my goal in this exercise is to advise a client who had a cabaret show shot in a tapeless medium and wants to have the files archived on her hard drive in the right format ready for either a PC or Mac editor to work on without having to deal with conversions....if that is possible ... so far whe has a ntfs drive with avi's...if I can advise her she can take that anywhere, just like the good ol' tape days, then that would be the solution and we won't be concerned about conversions....and I would equally be able to take any of my avi media and bring to FC when needed...While the original shooter-editor has Premiere on PC, I do not...I have FC Studio 1 and Sony Vegas Pro 8.Thanks

Adobe has an article on how to work between FCP and Premiere Pro.
Maybe you should just create a selects reel in Premiere Pro and then
do your fine cut once you've got the media down to a manageable size?

There are two docs - one on HOW to switch between FCP and PPro and
another on WHY you'd want to. Both are on links on this page under

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Media Manager question (FCP 7)

Hi Mark,

I misspoke. I said compressing when really what I meant was scaling as
opposed to cropping the video. I do know what actual compression is. Of
course, for this project even media managing to 8 bit uncompressed would
reduce file size by about 25%. But I do believe that they would benefit from
even greater economie of disk usage.

As I mentioned, this is a new client with a new edit system. Going forward I
am going to have them change their workflow, however, I need to get better
performance out of this system without asking them to start replacing a
bunch of hardware that they purchased in ignorance. Also their project was
set up by somebody that clearly had little experience with FCP. It's
unfortunate but that's the case. Of course, were that not the case, I
suppose they wouldn't have been looking for a new editor.

"Is there a way to get it to crop the six

That won't help. Compressing does much more than change the frame size. It "throws out" picture information to create a much smaller file size. This is done within the frame and has little to do with the six lines of video".

Be careful going down this road. If you're doing critical GRFX, this seemingly small frame size difference can turn out to be a huge problem when reconforming.

Hope this helps.
