[FCP-L] Re: OT: Social media at work... ban it or embrace it?

Working in an online TV station. "TV On the Net" - we have a different
challenge.

People here are ASSIGNED to handle our Social Media stuff.

Was a funny meeting when we assigned jobs: we had a "Mr Loquatious" who
never shut up - he got a Blog. "Mr Skinny Email" whose emails were so
short as to be incomprehensible - he got Twitter.

Me? I got the Facebook Fan page.

So each of us is required to spend time each day doing our chores. And
we have to report on it, too!

For other enterprises, we constantly hear of the "Battle for Talent"
where the challenge is to find, recruit and keep good people.

A few hours of net surfin' seems a small price to pay for happy workers.

Lots of businesses have jars of sweets, Staff BBQs, Friday drinks,
discounts, "free" phone calls, envelopes and pencils. THEY all cost
something.

Just re-align Staff Aims so they can better balance those few hours of
productive work with a few hours of net surfing, not forgetting, of
course, bouts of drunkenness, rage and lust.

Around here, people just kinda hang around after hours or on weekends,
they do work but they also congregate a bit. It's not a bad place to
hang out.

On the other hand, restrictive web policies might drive good people away.

But what would I know?

Re: [FCP-L] Thanks Michael for a great night yesterday. Looking for Assistant Editing work.

Rick's comments are good. But Chris, was your note intended to go to the Los
Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group, the folks who had Murch speak at their
meeting?

Besides some common subject matter and members, there's no connection
between FCP-L and LAFCPUG. Their organizers may see your note here. But if
you want to contact and thank them directly, then go here:

http://www.lafcpug.org

Also, I think their forum has more of an LA-centric focus than FCP-L, which
is fairly geographically dispersed.

It's appropriate to ask. At least I don't remember anyone getting bitched at or moderated for it.

You need to send out links to your work and resume if your looking for work.

Sign your name also. People don't like people who don't use their names on the list.

Yesterday was my first time and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I really love this group and was very impressed on how smoothly it went. I will be definitely attending future events. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to talk to enough people yesterday. I am an out of work editor/assistant editor and have been trying to find employment. I don't know if it's inappropriate in this forum to ask but is anyboby looking for an ediotr/assistant editor. I am at my wits end and have been looking for work for months now.

Thank you.

Re: [FCP-L] P2 Driver for Snow Leopard - Finally

Thanks Robin. Like a said - I do have QT7 installed but QT-X also
installed w/Snow Leopard. I cannot get "open with" > "change all" to
work ever. I was hesitant to remove QT-X with all the QT codecs in
Library/QuickTime used by both apps. I added a lot - Avid, Perian,
Flip4Mac, AC3, etc. Do any bad things happen if you trash QT-X. Will
files then open in QT-7? Just curious. I'm already back on 10.5.8.

Best,

Charles

BTW - Our animation person is in Germany - we Skype & use FTP for all
our production - often several compositions a month.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Was Murch, now Avid/FCP

When you have multiple sequences open in multiple timeline windows you have to pull the tabs apart in the canvas as well. With two canvas windows, the sequence will play in whichever timeline is active.

All the best,

Tom

Just tried it and I see what you mean - I expected that whichever timeline

timeline window is linked to the canvas (at least in v6 - maybe changed in
v7?). That'll teach me to make assumptions...

[FCP-L] Thanks Michael for a great night yesterday. Looking for Assistant Editing work.

Thank you.

Might as well switch between tabs on the timeline. That way you can actually watch down your selects sequence. Maybe it's handy to actually see both timelines at one time for some situations, but it seems to me you really need to be able to see your footage when selecting.

I keep looking at the Quickview and wishing it would function as a viewer for that second timeline, but alas.....

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Social media at work... ban it or embrace it?

Well...I admit guilt here to being on the internet a bit while
working. Well, actually while I break my concentration and after I
get up to stretch...or during a quick render. As some of you know, I
am on quite a bit of the forums for FCP. I do know how to manage my
time...NOW.

There was a time I was so bad that I did slack at work, and I was not
hired again because of it. And while that is a different sort of
"social networking," it got pretty bad. I have since learned how to
manage my time differently, and I post a lot less than I used to.
Well, except when I have a 1-4 hour render when finishing. But then I
post and then ride my bike or talk with coworkers and bosses.

WHile I am on Facebook, I don't do that much at work. Maybe at lunch
I'll check on my friends and then move on. But I only have like 20
people on there, not 387 or 5345. So it is short.

But yes, I have cut down my internet browsing a lot. And it was
because it was effecting my work...and I didn't see it at the time. I
hope that some people will get the hint without having to be
fired...or if that one firing will be the big hint they need so they
don't do it again.

Over phoner: fire 'em. Social media is different. It's a subtle, ever present distraction that only bubbles up intermittently. It's harder to say how distracting it is, but I'd argue at the very least it interrupts an editor's concentration and therefore is inappropriate.

Why is it that I've NEVER walked in on our "superstar" editors on Facebook, but the mediocre ones are frequently on the phone, on email, on Facebook. Coincidence? I think not.

That's nothing. As you can see by Patrick's email, now that Apple is delivering the chicklet keyboard (even worse the small bluetooth one with iMacs) by default, you don't know if you'll get bitten by the Exposè or the F-Key mapping or even BOTH.

Why do I know what one of the big changes in the alleged ALL NEW FCP is going to be or rather going to *have* to be, to stop drivin' us FCers nuts? :)

Did you check on the F keys in the Keyboard preference pane in System Preferences?

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Was Murch, now Avid/FCP

Actually I think Shane may mean having separate sequences open in separate timeline windows so you can see the contents of multiple open sequences at the same time. A second or third monitor really helps.

Re: [FCP-L] OT: Social media at work... ban it or embrace it?

With a culture of "no-fault" issue tracking, I believe that we document patterns of behavior that isolate people like that. I have worked at too many places that punish post with the abuses of production and pre-production staff. By laying out expectations beforehand to ALL individuals involved in the productionline (including writers) and tracking results, over time you see who is not living up to their commitments.

No exceptions - deadlines and results involving me are also tracked. It feels like big brother at first but when everyone benefits from increases in productivity and living up to your commitments, you get buy-in. Or people leave.

And that's fine too.

Murch has come to that conclusion also. he points to that as a good thing. The two platforms are merging closer to each other.

His analogy was automobiles. You can jump into any car and after taking a few seconds to see which button is placed where, you can drive it like an expert. It wasn't always that way was his point, but now the interface is standardized and that is good for all manufacturers and users.

Re: [FCP-L] Green screen in DVDSP

Thats what I am doing now. Whats weird is that I made one a day ago
with no problem. I saw a misspelling in the credits so fixed it and
now the QT ref won't work. Nothing else is changed.

It sounds as if one of the files that are being referenced is not being read

His FCP based assistant also said that later in the preso. Now, I'm no
FCP wizard, but even I knew that you can use a keyboard combo to make
that behave like Avid. (thanks to this group)

I add:

You can even change the keyboard mapping so that FCP acts exactly like
Avid in this regard, thereby avoiding the key combo. That's how I use
it.

[FCP-L] Function Keys in Snow Leopard

L-er's,

I must be a total idiot for being unable to figure this out...

In 10.6 and FCP 7 I've turned off all Expose keyboard commands. I've
turned off all but the System keyboard shortcuts in the System Prefs.

And yet I CAN'T do an Overwrite or Lock Video without some stupid OS
command taking over!

What am I missing?

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Was Murch, now Avid/FCP

Just as viable, yes, but a good deal slower - and less precise if the source
clips you want are on different tracks to the ones you want to cut them in
to on the record side.
I've heard it said many times before about how great it is that you can have
multiple sequences open in FCP, but I don't get that it's a great deal
better switching sequences by selecting a tab than it is by selecting from a
drop-down menu, as in Avid. Though it is nice that you can quickly flick
through them in FCP with keyboard shortcuts, (though not so practical if you
have a large number open at once).

And I regularly have some very choice words to say about those tabs when go
to try and land the playhead on an earlier part of my timeline and
accidentally activate a different sequence instead. Really wish there was a
way to enlarge the scrub bar like you can with individual tracks. Where's
that FCP feature request link again?

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Was Murch, now Avid/FCP

Pretty much my solution too.

Never mind, Apple do seem to be gradually adding all the nice little
features that I like about Avid to FCP bit-by-bit (adding multiple
transitions, better locator/marker functionality, improved speed change
tools, timecode window are a few of the most recent ones), so I live ever in
hope.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Was Murch, now Avid/FCP

Well, not as elegant but just as viable. Because FCP allows you to
have multiple sequences open, you can open the sequence, mark your
selection, then load it into the Viewer, then edit with sequence
content.

I constantly built select reels and do this.

[FCP-L] Re: Was Murch, now Avid/FCP

Yes, while you can get around the nesting issue, it still doesn't work as well as with Avid. You can't see what you're doing because you can't view the sequence's timeline when the it is in the Viewer. My workaround for this is copy and pasting vs insert/overwriting. Not nearly as elegant but what can you do?

Yeah. My buddy Patrick, who was called on to ask the last question to
Mr Murch, made this point. And this is mappable... Overwrite with
Sequence Content.

Re: GGG, bounding box selection of multiple layers (WAS: Re: [FCP-L] Was Murch, now Avid/FCP)

That's correct. GGG is a range selection and only selects on one track. Don't know why, but that's the way it works.

You can use Control-V to cut where you want to start and end, or you can mark In and Out points in the timeline to make a multitrack selection.

All the best,

Tom

I've been running Snow Leopard on 1 FCP7 seat in a dual boot config
for months & am not impressed. QT-X alone is a deal breaker. I am
still running 10.5.8 on all mission critical systems & location
offload laptops. I have not yet tested this new driver with the Duel
adapter. YMMV.

Best to all,
