Re: [FCP-L] Time for a new Mac Pro, which video card?

I have a new MacPro coming tomorrow. Bob Sliga - who was on the Color
team at Apple until recently - told me to get the ATI Radeon HD 4870
512 MB, for the best compatibility with Color. So I concur.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Was Murch, now Avid/FCP

Yes, thank you! I've now got a setup on my second monitor with a smaller second timeline with 4 select sequence tabs and a viewer (canvas). In many ways, it's nicer than Avid although you still have to cut and paste. I'm enjoying keeping the main timeline for cuts and my second timeline for selects sequences, b-roll sequences, etc., especially with FCP 7 since I have the sequences color-coded by type.

Re: [FCP-L] Time for a new Mac Pro, which video card?

Well, I am running Avid on my Octo with an x1900 XT card in it. It
works fine, but I am not getting as many RT effects as I could be had
I an NVIDIA card in there. But if I do that, then FCP and
Motion...and COLOR suffer.

[FCP-L] OT Roku box

I was wondering if any one is running a Roku type box to replace their
local cable company for cable/network TV watching. Comcast is our
local market provider and they have jacked up their rates over $60 in
the past two months. I'm looking to cut back on some home expenses
and would like to know what some of you are using. Appreciate any
pros and cons or other set ups you might be using.

Re: [FCP-L] OT: Social media at work... ban it or embrace it?

One other point here, The clicks you hear may actually be the work
they are required to perform.

So the sound of clicks alone should not be a warning of wrong doing on
it's own.

You should as always, evaluate the performance of the individual and
check their progress often if there is a concern about production.
That is the job of the Owner/Supervisor.....

If you monitor your employees progress on projects they will not have
much time to distract.

Big as in TV series, hundreds of hours of footage, etc? Works as a solid codec, no flashing green frames, etc?

Also if you go the H264 route make sure your recipient has their QT up to

Re: [FCP-L] OT best codec for mini-Qts via Compressor

Start with the presets that come with Compressor...they will give you a good
start point. From there you will have to modify the settings to your needs
(email, LAN, FTP). Save that setting, and it will appear under the Custom
twirly. If you then select that setting under Custom, you can create a
droplet from it.

Re: [FCP-L] OT best codec for mini-Qts via Compressor

Thanks everyone, esp. Kerry. I used the iPhone setting as a jumping
off point, put it on a data rate diet and was pretty happy with the
result.

Re: [FCP-L] OT: Social media at work... ban it or embrace it?

Todd,

This isn't about privacy. It's about a day's work for a day's pay. I don't care to know about anyone's private life. I DO care that someone may NOT be creating at their best due to
avoidable distractions. I'd hate to have "the few ruin it for the many", but unfortunately,
that's what may happen.

Yes, I'm on this forum in the middle of the day as Jim pointed out. The internet is a powerful and valuable resource. This forum. The Avid- L, Creative Cow, LAFCPUG. There's plenty of valuable information there. I consider it part of my responsibility to stay current with what's going on in our corner of the industry. That's why I'm reluctant to act on this issue. I want the people I work with to also have the same access to that info.

I appreciate all of the opinions and anecdotes posted on this topic. It's good to know that
I'm not the only one seeing this as an issue.

Re: [FCP-L] OT best codec for mini-Qts via Compressor

Well, let's work backwards. You have a 6 MB limit (48 megabits), for a 40
second project. Therefore you can encode at a combined bit rate of about 1.2
megabits per second which is quite respectable. In fact, there are plenty of
presets that you could use. At the moment I am sitting at a Final Cut Studio
1 system with Compressor 2 in it so I don't have, at my fingertips, settings
that might be available in Compressor 3 or 3.5. But on this system, you have
800 kbps settings for download or streaming video as well as iPod setting at
600 kbps.

Since it is so short, I would use a two-pass setting. And, since you have so
much room for data, I might stick with 128 kpbs stereo audio. And you still
have over 1000 kpbs available for video.

Re: [FCP-L] OT best codec for mini-Qts via Compressor

If this is a reoccurring thing (but also for other reasons) you may consider a MobileMe account. Compress and post directly from FCP and/or Compressor, send the generated link and you ceiling is a mere 20 GIGS and even native res if you like. ;-)

Re: [FCP-L] OT best codec for mini-Qts via Compressor

Thanks Kerry, the wildcard is that I don't know the e-mail attachment
limit of the different ISP. So I'll say 6megs as a conservative
ceiling. What I'm sending is on average 40 sec on this jop.

Audio quality can be low, mono yes, video more important here. Do you
think the Compressor iPhone the preset is the lowest bandwidth
default? (I can make custom setting by copying & tweeking such a
default) Given all the wild variables are you tending towards a
certain (video) codec for your web & e-mail needs?

Thanks,

Paul

We just shipped a 58" Panasonic via standard truck lines to Texas. Nightmare process...

I can't imagine the hassle of smuggling one...

Re: [FCP-L] OT: Social media at work... ban it or embrace it?

Working for wage or salary is a pretty straight trade between
employee and employer: You barter your time and talent for money.
Employers are upset by surfing, texting, phoning, or any other
activity that subtracts from the time spent creating product,
regardless of whether it's the employer or employee's machinery being
used. In essence, a hire that spends a lot of time goofing off has
unilaterally renegotiated their contract, being paid more per unit of
productive time.

So, what to do about it? I'd start by reminding everyone that even
salaried employees are expected to honor their agreement to do work
while at your workplace, and see if that has the desired effect. One
could then ratchet things up by declaring that you've installed new
software at your internet hub, and you'll be logging and reviewing
who goes where on the web and for how long. I would think that anyone
still screwing around after that would expect consequences.

Or maybe do a softer approach, which would be a 'swear jar' type of
punishment for anyone caught shopping or social networking, fine 'em
a buck per incident & periodically pass that along to those with a
clean record. That would be a way for the employer to reward the
desired behavior and punish the bad without being viewed as a goon &
without spending any money.

Gotta go, I should be at work!

If you are referring to LED backlight, then I respectfully disagree. If you are referring to OLED, then you may be right but I can't confirm since they don't exist in the market.

So I assume you mean the various LED backlight monitors. Yeah, they look great until you start to work on color correcting a movie with rich blacks... or you lean too far off center axis...

Blech!

Re: [FCP-L] OT best codec for mini-Qts via Compressor

There are an awful lot of variables in the question that you posted. First
of all, what size file do you consider e-mailable. While Google can handle
attachments of up to 20 MB, other e-mail providers support only much smaller
files.

Second of all, what length program are you talking about? It is far easier
to create a small Quicktime of a 30 second spot than a 30 minute show.

Third, how important is the audio? When working with small file sizes, you
can halve the amount of space needed for audio by sending a mono mix as
opposed to a stereo mix. And, you can save additional space by using lesser
sampling rates and lower bit rates.

That is why there really isn't a "one size fits all". However, it is easy to
create a custom setting.

If I want something quick and dirty, you could use one of the low bandwidth
streaming settings or an iPod setting.

I find that it almost always benefits me to create a custom setting,
however, when I create one that is particularly useful, I will use it for
several different clients.

Smuggling monitors will be much harder than smuggling heroin or
cocaine. Have you ever tried to swallow a 60" TV? Or "enema-ize" one?

Re: [FCP-L] Say goodbye to your plasmas

What about LED TV's? The ones I've seen seem to surpass the plasma's
I've seen (My Mac Book Pro LED is absolutely the best screen I've ever
seen on anything...)

Technologically speaking, LED technology seems to be superior to
plasma (so far...)

[FCP-L] OT best codec for mini-Qts via Compressor

Ok. I've been slow to use Compressor for this (had been using
Cleaner/Sorenson) for making small Quicktimes I'd send as very rough
client review e-mail attachments. (When higher-res required I'd post
better ones to FTP site)

Now that I'm working more with FCP, I'd like to use Compressor to
create these very small Quicktimes but I don't see a preset that
would be even in the ballpark I'm talking about. Or is it roll your
own using which codec? I realize there are options a plenty, but what
are people using? Thanks.
