[FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

An LCD only looks sharp at it's native resolution, so you don't want to adjust the display resolution as the way to get bigger system type.

When picking an LCD, think:

Bigger Type = Bigger Pixels = Fewer Pixels / Inch = Higher Dot Pitch

The dot pitch of LCD monitors ranges from about .16mm to about .40mm

If bigger type, buttons and timeline detail is what you're after then choose a monitor that goes against the conventional wisdom that finer dot pitch is better.

So, don't get just a bigger LCD, get a bigger LCD that doesn't have more pixels per inch. In other words, get a bigger LCD that also has a bigger dot pitch.

A nice Dot Pitch/PPI calculator:

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Iver,
You just saved me a ton of hassle.

I was set to create an editing setup, on no budget, that would let me
have the monitor down where my trifocals would see it in the near
vision section. I'll just get a dedicated pair of glasses!

I'm still interested in creating a Walter Murch-style standup setup.

[FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

I finally broke down and picked up _several_ pair of prescription "close up" glasses: one for reading, the other for computer work.

An opthamologist can set a prescription based on the expected distance from the material: my opthamologist asked me to estimate how far I sat from a computer and how close I liked to hold reading material.

Not only that, but as I also "code" (e.g., After Effects scripting and web development), I also have one set of computer glasses to which I had a yellow tint added (ala the Bausch and Lomb "Kalichrome" yellow). I also use the yellow lenses for non-color-critical work (e.g., timing).

A number of years ago during a marathon project, I found that yellow sunglasses cut down on eyestrain: it appears that computer monitors (particularly if you have to use Windows machines) output a ton of blue spectrum light and the yellow tint helped reduce the strain.

Think "blue blockers"...I find it really helps during extended sessions.

[FCP-L] Rush dupe 100 CD's in Chicago, anybody?

Neighbors,
My extremely low-budget rap client wants a 100 CDs by Saturday night,
with a fairly simple label.
Any takers?

Call me anytime or ATM (Addicted to Money). His number is
773-876-1124. He's reasonable to deal with, though be ready for the
thick Jamaican accent.

Cordially,

[FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Size versus resolution. Text and UI elements on an Apple 20" will appear larger than on a 23". If you like the 20s but want bigger text, look for a Dell, HP or Viewsonic 21 or 22. Same resolution, just bigger. If you like the 23s but but want bigger text, look for a Dell, HP or Viewsonic 24 - or even the new Apple 24. Same resolution, just bigger. Really tiny is the 17" MBP with the hi-res screen. Same resolution as the 23" but MUCH smaller.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Oh my God - I am becomming a member of "the old guys club". I too leave my cheapo reading glasses all over the house.
But I was under the impression that you should not randomly change perscription (like going from 1.5 to 3.5) because it's not good
for your eyes. But this might be an old wives tale. Terrance Curren has a T-Shirt that says "old guys rule".

Feh!

Go to the Dollar Store (not the ripoff Dollar General) and buy a ton of reading glasses for $1 pair. I keep the diopter sticker on because I shift between 1.5, 2.5, 3.5x depending on how fine the work I'm doing is. Leave them all around the house.

My real glasses correct for astigmatism -- need them for night driving and movies -- same pair of bifocals (small magnifiers so I can ignore them) for 7 years since they don't get trashed when I solder and drill and all that stuff.

[FCP-L] Re: Are there issues upgrading from OS10.5.6/FCP 5.4.1/QT7.5 on MBP to....

Question is... how far is it known safe to go?

From the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, especially if you're in
the middle of something" school... I'm now partway through the process
of updating software on my Sept. 07 MacBookPro.

I have to upgrade in order to edit a project begun on my previously
updated MacPro that's running OS 10.5.6, Final Cut Studio 2, and MXO2
hardware, which I'll also be running on the MBP.

We've upgraded it from OS 10.4.11 to OS 10.5.6 from disk and was
checking back posts on the list to see if there were any problems
reported for various combinations of Apple ProApps or third-party SW.

Don't seem to find any that pop up using various search phrases... but
wanted to be clear as my MP machine is in PA and I'm in CA for several
weeks with pre-Christmas delivery needed.

Hence the "how far" question.

Since this is also a multi-clip project and I'm on a two-burner stove
(rather than my usual four-burner), better performance would be nice
but not an absolute essential.

I can likely make a pre-Christmas present of the upgrade for FCS to
bring me up to FCP 7... and Snow Leopard, which would—according to Bob
Z, improve performance—as outlined in reply to a post from Phil two
months ago:

Suggestions appreciated, particularly re: If I don't go beyond FCS2,
