From what I've read on this list, you can't use the drobo as a media drive, it is unbelievably slow. Your backups will take forever. The Drobo is a home backup

Use the EVO HD as your MEDIA storage...the array you use for editing. Use the DROBO as your ARCHIVAL solution. Where you back up your original P2 card dumps.

A RAID5 solution gives you redundancy and throughput. That means it's fast enough for editing and gives you back-up protection. From what you are describing,

Using just regular DATA compression (e.g. Stuffit, Zip etc.) would/ could probably produce even smaller results and you obviously don?t get any degradation
