[FCP-L] Output source clip TC to tape?

Is there a way to get FCP 6.0.5 / Kona3 to use the TC from the clips
in a sequence instead of the sequence TC as the source for the TC
information embedded in the SDI signal? Some setting or plug-in I'm
missing?

Thanks,
Jay

Re: [FCP-L] .dss unix video file format?

It may require a forensic video software plug-in.

There's one for the Avid called dTective, that allows it to capture
those multi-plexed security camera videos and split the multi-plexed
video into individual streams. It's by Ocean Systems. Maybe they have
a Mac/FCP version.

[FCP-L] .dss unix video file format?

Google is letting me down here.

Anyone heard of a unix video file format -- .dss -- coming from a
security camera system.

VLC will play it and says it is some variant of the DIVX codec,
640x480 (square PAR), and 30 fps. It does not seem to like the VLC
export option though.

MPEG Streamclip, DIVX player, Quicktime Pro, and FCP will not open it
up.

I have Win XP in Parallels. Or perhaps there is a Unix app that can
transcode this to some form I can use to get it into FCP?

Thanks,

James

Re: Don't nest (WAS: Re: [FCP-L] putting image in a frame)

I agree Doug. In my experience, nesting is best avoided. The only time
I ever used to nest is when exporting a viewing copy of the sequence
with a timecode burn in.

Re: [FCP-L] putting image in a frame

Even tho this is GENERALLY the approach you want to take, if the
images don't have the same dimensions, then you're in for a treat,
since obviously pasting a scale attribute of e.g. 34% from a 2
megapixel image to a 4 megapixel image. In which case you only a)
resize all images BEFORE importing in e.g. Photoshop or b) resize all
individually from the timeline or c) yes, NEST them all first!

I to date (8 years) have never had any issues with nesting. At least
none as previously described. Some minor ones when nesting different
presets or with some codecs. Aside from the fact that if it in fact
DOES show problems, you'll have lost what? A full 15 seconds? After
which you could still switch to using the other options.

By the way, if you didn't know, FCP in fact has a "Storyboard"
function, should you need a different ordering than the alphabetical
one. Meaning you can "Storyboard" them in a different order and then
drag all to the timeline in that order. If needed, let me know... not
up to describing the process at this point. It's a tad convoluted. :-)

Don't nest (WAS: Re: [FCP-L] putting image in a frame)

Doug and All,
I've had the worst luck with nesting and the bad effects show up right
away.
I'll nest a few clips and then they're black when I try to play them.

I just installed FCP 7 as part of the new FCS and I haven't wanted to
even check if nesting got better.

Unless they fixed it, nesting is the great crippler of young adults.
Please help prevent this tragedy from striking projects you love.
Don't nest; don't let friends nest.

Re: [FCP-L] putting image in a frame

If you're doing off-line work that will be uprezzed (conformed) later, then nesting is a BAD idea. It may be the quickest, easiest step for now, but whomever is faced with conforming the sequence will curse the day that you walked through their door. They might even throw things at you. They will definitely cross you off the holiday card list.

Its even easierr in FCP because, unlike Avid, all the video tracks (filler) contain alpha so there is no need to apply a Resize Effect.
Simply double-click on the clip to load it in the viewer > motion tab > & scale it. Once resized copy the attribute and paste it to the other clips.

Re: [FCP-L] putting image in a frame

Once you set the parameters of the first shot you can "Copy" the
shot, then "Paste Attributes" to the rest. The easy way is to lay
all your shots in, do your first one, right click to Copy the shot,
then Select the rest. Then right click on any of the Selected shots
and select "Paste Attributes". It will do them all at once.
