Is the field order reversed? Try dropping it down one pixel vertically
and render a test section.

In fact, she tried rendering it out at 60fps & it looks great - exactly what I wanted, however I can't put that on tv..

[FCP-L] Bad jitter in rendered clips from AE

I have a 30 sec clip that was rendered to an Animation codec at 29.97fps for broadcast in SD NTSC. The video was all shot at 1080i at 29.97 on a green screen, and the graphic designer composited that behind & in front of other layers that she created in After Effects. When I bring it into Final Cut (6) and render it in 10 bit Uncompressed (though it doesn't seem to matter to what codec I render it) the whole timeline plays back very jittery. It almost looks like it should be de-interlaced - except that the jitter looks like it's vertical, not horizontal. It looks like this in FCP, Quicktime, & After Effects. If I stop on each frame it looks great, but stepping through slowly looks jittery, also. It's as if I had slowed it down & repeated the frames. In fact, she tried rendering it out at 60fps & it looks great - exactly what I wanted, however I can't put that on tv.. But if I try to convert it to 29.97 it looks just as bad. I've tried every combination of field dominance, codec, progressive or de-interlaced, and most other option I could find or think of.

Anyone have any ideas? Can I provide any more information?

Thank you in advance,
Mike

Re: [FCP-L] Semi-OT: Squeeze v. Episode

I've got the latest version of Squeeze. There's a lot of cool stuff
implemented in it. It looks better and is faster than Squeeze 5. I
think there are plenty of presets. The product is pretty radically
different than it was three or four years ago. They have done some
stuff with what they call "publishing" which is pretty interesting as
far as workflow is concerned and it has batching features too. You can
set up watch folders and have stuff automatically uploaded to an ftp
site of your choice at the end of an encode with an email that goes
out to a client at the end of the upload. Completely unsupervised.

I did a review of the last version of Squeeze before the current
version. THe current version is 6 and I reviewed 5.5. 6 has some more
cool stuff than 5.5, but 5.5 is closer to where they are now than
probably when you last saw them "many years ago." I'd definitely
suggest you give them another look.

I occasionally use Compressor still, but only when I want a specific
preset that I know I can just drop on in Compressor.

Re: [FCP-L] Semi-OT: Squeeze v. Episode

Has anyone used the lastest version of Squeeze?

They seem to have integrated a Review and Approve process into their
toolset.

We migrated off Squeeze many years ago onto what became Episode Pro
(Telestream bought it, re-branded it, and massively spiked the price
on it). I like batch management on it. The large number of presets and
intuitive interface make it easier to use than Compressor.

FWIW, I've started using BitVice again for HD -> MPEG-2 NTSC/PAL DVDs
- especially for my RED clients who hate what Compressor does to their
footage on standard def DVDs.

Re: [FCP-L] External DVD burner

Buffalo doesn't make the burner. It's probably a Pioneer, LG or other OEM manufacturer. They just buy them, put them in thier own case.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

Yeah it's a little clunky. You still have to select still image.
Hopefully the FCP gods heed our call for direct still image export.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

Motion still seems to be the easiest, especially if there's no shortcut
in Color. I also was able to import as tif, which means I have the files
on hand should I need to print them up, resize, or anything else.

The other FCP problem is that I had to chose still image everytime from
the pulldown menu as the default was quicktime movie, and FCP didn't
keep the last settings which I also found strange. (Unless I'm missing
something.)

I'm sure that people have asked for it, I'm just wondering why it isn't
a top priority, given that it's a common, basic task, and a common
feature in other programmes.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

Just a thought, but another option is to export your whole sequence as
an image sequence. Then, switch your timeline to show frame numbers
instead of timecode and take note of all the frames you want stills
of. Go to your exported image sequence directory and delete all but
the frame numbers you want to keep.

Maybe practical in some circumstances, but not so practical in others of course.

Of course, Martin could always make us a little plug-in (or add the
feature to Loader) to make our lives a bit simpler...

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

I just create markers on the sequnce for the stills you want... then
create a keyboard shortcut for export with QuickTime conversion (I use
option-shift e). Then just command arrow up or down to navigate to the
marker points and option-shift e to export the still.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

A technique featured in my book:
http://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/killersecrets

================
Exporting Multiple Still Images

If you need to export lots of still images from various points in a sequence then it can get very tedious to export each one separately. Here's a technique that can save a lot of time.

1. Create a new bin that will contain the selected images and temporarily move the current sequence into the new bin.
2. Mark an in and out point on the desired frame.
3. Press Command-U to create a subclip of the marked frame in the sequence. A new subclip is created in the same bin as the sequence, which is why we temporarily moved the sequence to a new bin.
4. The subclip name is already highlighted so you can rename the sequence subclip and this will become the name of the exported file.

Repeat the above steps for each still frame. When all the subclips have been created:

1. Move the sequence back to its original location then right-click the Bin and choose Batch Export from the shortcut menu.
2. In the Export Queue window, set the desired destination and choose Still Image from the Format menu.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

OK what's it's worth - here's my cheap 'n cheerful way (don't be horrified)

Open FRAME VIEWER - use the IN point to move the frame from the timeline
into it

Open Snaps Pro X from Ambrosia Software. Screen grab from frame viewer
image.

Not worth doing for one frame - but for a series of stills it's a time
saver.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

Just because it hasn't been implemented, doesn't mean that no user has
thought of it or asked for it. It just means that it's been too low on
Apple's list of feature requests to matter. This is the same with any
software.

HEY! I just figured out an easier way than using MOTION, I think.

Color has a simple export JPEG feature. The "down arrow" jumps you to
the next shot in the sequence, so between those two things, you should
be able to quickly export a still of every shot. Send your sequence to
Color and off you go. I can't figure out how to get Export JPEG to a
shortcut in Color though. If you had a Tangent Devices WAVE panel, you
could map it to a button on that, I think, using the WAVE mapper.

Nope, very hard to do in FCP. There are no hooks for Automator and no
direct way to apply a keyboard command for export still.

Request it as a feature request using the feedback mechanism in the
FCP menu.

Re: [FCP-L] exporting stills short cut?

I tried using Quikeys yesterday, nothing doing and wasted a lot of time,
then tried automator, but didn't feel like going thru figuring it out to
work on the problem any longer. if anyone knows how to do it in a few
steps, I'd love to hear about it. For now, tho, Motion works ok.

The question still is that, after so many versions and years of FCP, and
given that Premier and Motion has a quick and easy way to export a still
image, how is it that FCP doesn't? has no one requested it or thought of
it? Not only that, but everytime I tried to export, you have to go thru
several steps.
