In all fairness, it's LAFCPUG's event. Walter is gracious enough to present and they like having him because he's a good draw. Besides, on most of the recent films, he has been cutting picture on FCP, some audio on Pro Tools and mixing on an ICON.

[FCP-L] AJA QTtoDPX and FCP don't agree
1080psf 23.98 DL 10bit Log RGB
I capture 4:01 that's 4 seconds and 1 frame from a tape. FCP reports
it as 4:01. QTPro reports it as 4:01. That should be 97 frames. I
run it through AJA QT to DPX and I get 120 frames out. I capture
10:01 from a tape. FCP reports is as 10:01. QTPro reports it as
10:01. That should be 241 frames. I run it through QTtoDPX and get
263 out. WTF? Really, what is going on here? It's like it's
regularly capturing anywhere from 1 to 3 frames extra on the head and
22 to 23 frames extra on the tail. I captured 10 clips last night and
they all followed the pattern. What is going on? And how do I make
it stop? Please, can some point me in the right direction. I've
checked all sorts of settings and can't make it stop doing this crap.
Thank you for the assistance.

Even flv's saved to external drives from other computers show as a document icon when that drive is mounted in my computer. It's just weird. I have removed Perian as per the instructions but the icons are still showing as documents. In my searching the web to solve this issue I have come across numerous blurbs regarding Perian and FCP. Anybody have personal experience with this? Can any one tell my what's going on with the icon changing thing?

Re: [FCP-L] Murch "back on Avid" for at least one film...
I'm currently cutting at a shop that 95 % Avid, as part of a new project on FCP so this has been on my mind. I'm trained on Avid (MC version 4.5 I believe - I certainly have a clear memory of version 5 goodies arriving) but have worked primarily on FCP the last 5 years by happenstance and choice when given.
Anyway - I've learned a lot from reading Murch's books and various things his assistants and team post online. His editorial procedures really are wider than any particular edit software - and involve a lot of Filemaker and other structures. I'm sure he'll find something interesting to say in his chat as always, but I suspect somewhere in they he'll say something along the lines of "changing tools keeps you fresh...in many ways, it's great to be home with Avid again, though now I wish I could open multiple sequences as once..."

If installed correctly, you will have "Perian.component" in /Library/
Quicktime folder, and "Perian" item (Swiss Army Knife Icon) in System
Preferences in "Other" (file in /Library/PreferencePanes/
Perian.prefpane.
.flv's simply play in a Quicktime player like any other movie.
Yes, .flv's do show up with generic icons. So what. Double-clicking
will still open QT Player.
Maybe a future release by the volunteer Perian group <http://
www.perian.org> willl address that issue. The Support area on the
site may provide some suggestions if you're still having problems.
