FCP-L has grown a lot. That's mostly good. But this list aims to host a
conversation between experienced professional users of FCP.
We've recently had a growing number of newbie questions and members. Nothing
against new and non-professional users. There are good online resources for
those folks. But FCP-L isn't one of them. Of course new users can lurk on
FCP-L, but some newbies don't lurk.
In order to keep the FCP-L conversation focused I'd like to ask all of you
to be selective when you pass along information about FCP-L to others,
especially other email lists and web forums.
If the person is a post or video/film professional (e.g., perhaps a
long-time Avid editor who's new to FCP, an ENG photog who wants to come in
out of the rain, or of course a long-time user of FCP), or the list is
mostly populated by appropriate professionals (e.g. Avid-L2, CML, even
RAMPS), then feel free to mention FCP-L when appropriate (i.e., in response
to a question, but not as a big FCP-L promotional campaign).
But if the person's brand new to editing, or the list has a lot of members
who aren't serious editors and FCP users but perhaps are earnest and
enthusiastic, and really want to learn then consider directing them to some
FCP lists/forums with broader foci. Creativecow.net, cutter talk, etc. To be
clear, I'm not slagging the cow or cutter talk. Both are good places, but
they're different from FCP-L.
If the person is an idiot or jerk, or the list is full of such folks, just
point them to the Apple store where they can buy a copy of FCP to replace
the pirated version they're using now. Or send them here:
That'll confuse them.
People who want to join FCP-L still need to have their subscription request
approved by a moderator, and I'm being more selective these days. So there
is some access control. But my preference is to err on the side of
inclusion and admission. And I'm seeing requests from people who don't
belong on FCP-L and who frankly won't benefit from the discussion. And then
I get follow up emails when their subscription isn't approved, and that
could all become a drag.
This might seem elitist, but there you go. Hope you all can help...
Thanks for reading,
