Thanks for your response Tom, its a POP account so it normally appears
on both my iPhone and MBP, I then have a pref setting to delete from
server after 1 day.

Its back working again, but I definitely got a message on my iPhone
which did not come through to my MBP, each device checks the servers
using POP, one got it, the other did not. I understood that POP checks
the integrity of the data when it sends it to the device and resends
any bad packets, so it should have picked up the error, it failed, and
thats a bit sobering that it failed to do that, I guess shit happens.
