[FCP-L] New tech from Silverado - take a guess...

Folks

We're building up a new piece of technology at Silverado and we're giving you the chance to guess what it is...

http://bit.ly/2Pz4WZ

If you are observant, you'll be able to get it pretty quick. We've posted it up at REDuser and no one has gotten it right so far.

Re: [FCP-L] Rant: Presumptive Clients

These shows were being QC'd in Seattle, then sent to Boston, who QC'd them again. After the first two failed, they were looking at every tape with a magnifying glass.

I was speaking to someone from WETA down here in DC and he mentioned how annoyed they are when they ask for hdcam, and get every other format under the sun. You don't make many friends there it seems when you send them something they didn't ask for.

A lot of times passing QC at *PBS* is almost never the network itself, but the individual PBS affiliates that you are dealing with. These stations are the gateway into the PBS system for a nationally-distribu ted show and are free to interpret the Red Book specs as strictly as they want to. It's their name that goes up to the network QC folks.

[FCP-L] Re: Semi-OT: Mac QT to PC WMV gamma settings

Is nobody getting the difference between display gamma and the gamma
curve used by the video editor and color corrector?

The two are very different.

I have speculated that Snow Leopard may move Apple to the common display
gamma used by pee cees. But when you send someone a Quicktime file,
you're color correcting to scopes (assuming people actually use scopes
these days) and Apple's Final Cut Studio is known to mess the gamma up
in Quicktime files.

Here is a workaround:

Apple ProRes decoder for windows induces a small gamma shift when you
import a ProRes Quicktime using Graphics. If you import as Video levels,
levels are even more wrong.

Even if you use Quicktime on your Windows application to export to image
sequence, the shift will be there.

This was tested using ProRes 1.0.

Exporting an image sequence on a Mac gives you the right levels.

So if you are trying to go cross-platform between a Mac and a Pee Cee,
you will want to export an image sequence and not a Quicktime file, then
import the image sequence and change it to an .AVI or a .WMV file in
Windoze.

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard uses a gamma value of 2.2 by default. In
versions of Mac OS X prior to 10.6, the default system gamma value was
1.8. Using the capabilities of ColorSync, the gamma value of 2.2 is
automatically applied and seamlessly transitions your display, images
and videos to the new gamma value.

change from what I can tell with SL is how the app displays the image,
not the display itself. For instance, the ACDs I have do not use 2.2 as
Apple's default gamma when I select the preset profile. You have to
create a profile that is specifically set to 2.2 gamma. I think the
difference is how QT X and FCP display files within their own UI that
has changed.

Re: [FCP-L] Rant: Presumptive Clients

True. However, this will not be a national broadcast, but local. The last time we sent files over to PBS to be put to tape, there were no problems in QC, and we were actually complemented on how great everything looked.

And judging by some of the other local pieces I've seen broadcast on this station, QC beyond legal levels seems non-existent.

Re: [FCP-L] Rant: Presumptive Clients

I was more referring to a thread the other week differentiating between the different types of grades. By "Objective," I mean balancing shots & getting levels close to proper values (admittedly, *close* since I'm using software scopes). "Subjective" grading would have been for mood, etc.

Re: [FCP-L] Rant: Presumptive Clients

My limited experince with PBS and HD was a season of Chefs A Field (http://www.chefsafield.com). The hack owner of the company I worked for wouldn't pay an extra $35 per episode to have them run through a legalizer while the HD captioning was being done. The first 6 shows failed QC, due to gamut errors. Yes, we were using SD scopes on an HD system and monitoring the downconvert. After he assured the clients that it was all my fault (in front of me), he spent $6000 on an HD legalizer. All thirteen episodes passed after that. So instead of spending $455 on having 13 episodes legalized during the HD captioning dub, he spent $6000 on a box that hasn't been used since. Did I mention he is a prick and an idiot all rolled up into one?

Knock on wood. But never without external scopes. But also never HD.

[FCP-L] Smoke on Mac update

From John Montgomery on FXPHD:

We haven't been able to say anything up until now as we strongly respect our
Non-Disclosure agreements as beta testers, but the rumors are true: there is
definitely smoke for mac in Autodesk's future. They just issued a press
release stating that a tech demo of the software will be shown at the
interBEE trade show in Tokyo beginning on November 18th:

*At Inter BEE 2009, Autodesk will show several workflow presentations:
- Technology Preview of Autodesk Smoke 2010 for the Mac OS X platform
- Twice daily presentations of Smoke running on this new platform. See how
the Smoke integrated toolset for editorial finishing can help
post-production and broadcast facilities be more efficient. Limit 80
attendees per session. Limited advance registration available at
www.autodesk.co.jp/interbee2009/specialevent*

Rest assured that at fxguide we're on top of this story and will presenting
full coverage when we're able to do so….

[FCP-L] Re: ProRes level change when playing vs stopped...

No, no range check, but I am now convinced I have a setting mismatch of some kind... I took the drive home with me last night, hooked it up there and fiddled about and eventually got some clips to work and others to act the opposite of what had been happening at work, in other words they would look one way parked and then go DARKER in play, backwards from what had been happening at work. So I labeled the clips good/not good goes dark, brought the drive into work and the ones labeled good look one way parked and go Brighter in play, and the ones labeled not good, at work play normally.
So, I think I need to dig into my settings (and manuals...) and find the difference.
Meanwhile, thanks for the help so far.

Do you perchance have "Range Check" turned on? If so, try switching it off and see if that produces the expected results.

Re: [FCP-L] Rant: Presumptive Clients

>(though how you can color correct a doc without scopes is beyond me)

Believe me, I would love to borrow the UltraScope from my primary place of work. Unfortunately, the budget doesn't always allow for it… especially when things like color grading are practically an afterthought. I just have to live with the scopes within Color. Though I am bringing in my own light-weight video card to output to a monitor. But some grading is better than none.

As far as the actual layoff to tape, they're now working direct with the local PBS station at my suggestion. I have done this previously (recently actually) where we deliver uncompressed quicktime files and they layoff to tape. It works out quite well as long as I'm conservative with my grading. Though I can't really push anything too far as I don't have the time to do much beyond basic objective grading.

PS: Also wanted to thank you for writing your books. They've been a great help in taking on color grading.

Re: [FCP-L] Rant: Presumptive Clients

The other solution is to use either another local production house or
one of Terry Curren's Digital Service Station companies that are
scattered around the country.

You just send them the finished, graded file (though how you can color
correct a doc without scopes is beyond me) and Digital Service Station
will deliver as many dubs of the tape in whatever formats from the
file. This is probably your most foolproof solution.

Another way to do this even cheaper would be using an AJA KiPro. I
just wrote an article in the latest provideocoalition newsletter:
http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/pvcproductionpipeline

Basically I go through most of these same methods myself for HD. I
have the scopes and the video card (Kona2) and DigiBeta and Beta and
DVCPro decks, but no HD decks. So if I need HD output, I simply export
a QT file to a hard drive and shuffle the hard drive to a place that
has Final Cut and an HD deck. They export it for me and charge me for
it. There are a bunch of places in Chicago that do this. I'm not sure
about Austin, though I have some clients down there. I'd just ship a
drive off to LA or Chicago or Orlando or Columbus or if you can find a
place in Austin or Dallas that can do it. Let them know it's for PBS
and that you need it QC'd for PBS specs. Provide your local station's
PBS specs if you have them, or assume that they're the same as the
national PBS specs.

Just what I was going to suggest. Don't reinvent the wheel,
especially when you can't afford decent rims.

Always put the ball in the other guy's court!!

email them back outlining what it will take to accomplish what they
wish. explain to them that you don't have the gear necessary to do
the job and suggest they try to get in touch with one of their
contacts for a trade or to call in a favor.

good luck

[FCP-L] Rant: Presumptive Clients

First, backstory: I am primarily a commercial editor & motion designer. But sometimes I do off-projects such as color grading & design for local docs. I freelance at facilities or occasionally work from home, where I have minimal gear.

One project coming up is just such an off-project: color grading a doc destined for the local PBS station, which is happening in a couple weeks. It is a small outfit with a couple of MacPros, an HDTV, small SD broadcast monitor (no video cards, though), and a couple HVX-200s.

<rant>

Today, I received this in an email:

"I'm hoping I can get you to help us output HD files to HDCam tape for Public TV. Can I ask when you might be able to do that anytime after 12/19?"

I'm hired on to color grade, and now I'm being asked to arrange HD output to a deck which they don't have through a video card the also do not have. Knowing the discount I am giving them, I know they don't have the budget to rent a deck, nor do I know of facilities in the immediate area who both have an HDCam deck and would be willing to donate the time necessary to arrange output. But somehow it's presumed I can just take care of it.

At least this is coming up now and not on my second-to-last booked day with them.

I understand that one can't be expected to fully knowledgeable in every aspect of (post) production, especially in a small documentary outfit, and maybe I'm making too much out of it, but it drives me nuts when things like HD deliverables aren't thought out before production starts, when the choice to shoot and post in HD (720p, actually) has already been made.

</end rant>
