Jeff,
I'm not sure of precisely why there is an issue, but you are asking the HD flat panel to do conversions that create the worst possible results. The image is going through A-D conversion, deinterlacing, line interpolation, noise reduction, sharpening and scaling. None of this happens in a CRT or your on-screen GUI on the computer monitor. The quality is a direct result of the internal electronics of the particular flat panel you are using and its native resolution. Does the flat panel have a 1:1 pixel mode? If so, how does it look? Do you have the ability to do an external conversion to compare? Do you have other monitors (like a high-quality LCD or plasma) to compare?
