If you can just replace the hard drive cheaply, I would say go ahead.

We have an old clamshell iBook that one the the guys writes on. That's
it. Its not good for much else but it still has some life in it.

I also have a Bondi Blue iMac that i still use as a label printer. It
just won't die and the label printers won't either.

If you need more then I would say move on up and get a new laptop.
