[FCP-L] Re: OT: How did they do "digital effects" in the analouge era?

Page turn, bah!

As I recall: grab the frame you want to start the effect on into
paintbox or framestore.

Flip it over and do some colour effect on it - invert or green'ise etc.

DVE it to offscreen somewhere. Say, bottom right.

Program a move of that frame going across screen.

Match up a wipe which reveals it as it goes.

Line up 3-machine edit so that incoming shot is in the right place.

Use GPI to trigger the mixer of DVE or something...

AS THE EFFECT PROGRESSES.... the flipped frame moves into vision, with a
wipe progressively revealing it so it goes from little triangle in
corner to larger one as it passes through frame. Make sure the
underlying shot has a similar wipe which will take IT off screen
(without moving it) and which is hidden by the top layer, the inverted
page. Sometimes a little fuzzy edge on both wipes helps the illusion of
a turned image (rather than the static one which it really is).

Note: inverted page has diagonal wipe revealing it from top left to
bottom right - source page has diagonal wipe removing it and its wipe
goes from bottom right to top left. See?

And at 300, 400, 500, 600 per hour, who wants to rush?

(THAT'S what I see now-a-days, Junior Editors racing to complete
something which costs peanuts. If they had the kind of balls to work
methodically when the clock ticks over more than their wage every hour
or so...)

I'm running a dual-quad 2.26 with 12GB RAM and 4 internal drives. It's in my home office under the desk next to my legs. It puts out moderate heat, but nothing unusual. Fans hardly ever kick in. Less heat or noise than any G4 or G5. The two Apple displays seem to heat up the room more than the computer.

Re: [FCP-L] Fwd: New Processor, Hard Drive Options Available For Mac Pro and Xse

I am wondering if, in the Dual Quad-Core systems, Apple has a heat problem.

One huge issue I saw with the Quad-Core system was that one could not add as much RAM. I might have been tempted had Apple placed enough slots in there for 32GB of system RAM.

The single thing that I have noticed with Macs that will speed them up is copious amounts of system RAM. One thing I'm not happy about is that Intel-based Macs apparently do not have options for processor upgrades. I upgraded the processor in my old G4-400 (Sawtooth) and the computer was useful for a good 10 years.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: LG projector phone

As I was reading this, the commercial for the projector phone just ran. The projector is separate from the phone and clips to the back of it. It looks about 3 times thicker than the phone.

Really tiny elves!

If you're not quite ready to upgrade your phone, you can get this:

http://www.wowwee. com/en/products/ tech/projection/ cinemin/swivel

It's a projector about the size of an iphone, and in a comletely dark room, will cast a remarkably large, bright image. It's useless in day light, but under proper viewing conditions, is quite acceptable. Oh, and cost only around $300 bucks.

[FCP-L] OT: LG projector phone

I thought it was a joke. Evidently I was wrong. I just saw an ad on tv for a
new phone that has a built in projector. I just can't imagine how something
that small can generate enough light, especially battery-powered.

Anyone know how they can accomplish this?

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: How did they do "digital effects" in the analouge era?

As I recall, there were two complimentary effects. One for the front of the
page and the second for the back. So you could do the effect in two passes
if all you had was a single channel.

P.S. We also got the disk with the page turn. There was also a cool
filmstrip effect.

Re: OT:Re: [FCP-L] OT: How did they do "digital effects" in the analouge era?

I was a CMX guy as well. Got the framed certificate in a box somewhere.
I even got an original manual for the Ampex ACE editor.
My PM hated the GVG-131 but I found it kinda easy, didn't even RTFM.
Did the TD/edit controller thing as well. MY PM told me that it was
the wave of the future :>)

OT:Re: [FCP-L] OT: How did they do "digital effects" in the analouge era?

Hey I was CMX then ISC/Grass/Editware but the Calloway worked very much like it's predecessors. Heck they all came from CMX around that time. ET was using Calloways and I had many from there camp on staff. This was just when the first GVG-131's were out at a bargin of 13K for a three machine rig. Oh and the scratch and sniff jog pad. Don't miss that but I do miss the original ISC jog wheel, the latter bigger wheel with center touch jog was okay but the years of the scratch and sniff were painful. We had one of the first GVG-141's at Glendale Studios but they couldn't get it to work so they gave us a 41 which was more solid. The switcher was a 300 one of the first units and it had come from the Osmond studios in Utah. It didn't even have effects dissolve. They modified nearly everything but the ME pushbuttons to get it to work with the editor. Mighty sweet room when we got done. I TD'd and edited pilots right from the control room. No need for post just let me grab the edit controller and pick up from the last roll in bang when your done your done.

Work tape. Bounce it back and forth between the machines and pray
for no generation loss :>)
That is how we used to do it.

Re: [FCP-L] OT: How did they do "digital effects" in the analouge era?

Late to the party on this. But the original Abekas A-53 didn't come
standard with the page peel. Had to order the optional Warp Board to
do that. The A-53 D had the page peel standard. The warp board was
a $45k Option on the original A-53. Gosh I miss the 1680
switcher :>) Ahhhh, memories...

Re: OT:Re: [FCP-L] OT: How did they do "digital effects" in the analouge era?

Wow! You worked on the muppet show! I tip my hat to you, we still
watch that show in my family.

Cheers,

Re: [FCP-L] How do I get better keying results in FCP?

I downloaded the latest versions of some keyers today from Toolfarm.
The shot was a well lit woman with some frizz and curls that I wanted
to keep.

For me, the fastest, easiest and best looking key was Keylight $250
node locked. One click and a couple of tweaks, looks great. I can see
individual hairs.

Followed by Digital Film Tools' zMatte v3 for FCP $375. I like this
one because of the built in light wrap. Slower to render though.

And then Red Giant's Primatte Pro $474. A little more work and slower
to render.

I also tried the FCP Keyer in FCP 7 and the stock Primatte RT keyer. I
almost couldn't pull the key I needed with either of these keyers
without using something like Key Correct Pro.

Re: OT:Re: [FCP-L] OT: How did they do "digital effects" in the analouge era?

You young lads!

And when you got more than 4 or 5 layers (as we'd call them now) on a
Quad tape, you could tell which were the oldest just by looking at them.

Though the Muppet show audience shot had 7 layers, but careful use of
equipment made the complete assembly only 3rd generation. Three
machines and a studio.

The banding wasn't too bad, but after the main edit and a standards
conversion to NTSC, the pictures were, how shall I put it, a little
noisy in places.
