It's hard to say which compromise you should choose unless you are
clear about what release takes precedence. The easy answer is 24p
because it converts easily to 25p and 60i, but I don't like 24p... so
I am generally reluctant to choose that course unless it is clearly an
film replacement AND you know what you are doing from shooting to
finish.
If PAL is your primary release, how about 50p? If shooting 720p, then
60p vs. 50p is mostly just a question of which market you are
optimizing for.
If 1080 and distribution is international, than you're probably in the
"film look" arena and you should assemble a good 24p team. If you're
shooting primarily for NTSC broadcast with a PAL conversion, shoot 60i
and do a high-end standards conversion. If the reverse, do the reverse.
No matter what you do, work to the highest possible quality in the
original and pay for a high-quality standards conversion at the end.
It's worth it.
