[FCP-L] Glyph Portagig hard drive

I had a vendor send me a Glyph Portagig hard drive last week with video
files on it. It is buss-powered so he didn't provide me with the optional
external power supply. At the office, on a five-year old G5, I was unable to
read any data, although the System Profiler saw that there was a drive
attached. This was the case with both the FW 800 and USB 2 connections.

So I took the drive home to test it on my recent generation Intel iMac. In
this case, the System Profiler wouldn't see the driver, however, if I hooked
up BOTH the FW 800 and USB 2 ports, it seemed like there was enough power to
access the drive. Although the Profiler didn't see it, I was able to view it
on the Desktop and access the necessary files, to a degree.

It would copy for several minutes and then stop giving me an error message
that I disconnected the hard drive. Then it would reappear and continue
copying. In the end, I chose to transfer a few files, eject and disconnect
the hard drive allowing it to cool down, and then reconnect and repeat. In
the end I was able to retrieve all of my data but I was wondering if anybody
else has had a similar experience.

I assume that there was just not enough power getting to the drive to
operate reliably and I have asked for the power supply in order to test my
theory. Am I missing something?
