An opthamologist can set a prescription based on the expected distance from the material: my opthamologist asked me to estimate how far I sat from a computer and how close I liked to hold reading material.
Not only that, but as I also "code" (e.g., After Effects scripting and web development), I also have one set of computer glasses to which I had a yellow tint added (ala the Bausch and Lomb "Kalichrome" yellow). I also use the yellow lenses for non-color-critical work (e.g., timing).
A number of years ago during a marathon project, I found that yellow sunglasses cut down on eyestrain: it appears that computer monitors (particularly if you have to use Windows machines) output a ton of blue spectrum light and the yellow tint helped reduce the strain.
Think "blue blockers"...I find it really helps during extended sessions.
