Oh my God - I am becomming a member of "the old guys club". I too leave my cheapo reading glasses all over the house.
But I was under the impression that you should not randomly change perscription (like going from 1.5 to 3.5) because it's not good
for your eyes. But this might be an old wives tale. Terrance Curren has a T-Shirt that says "old guys rule".

Go to the Dollar Store (not the ripoff Dollar General) and buy a ton of reading glasses for $1 pair. I keep the diopter sticker on because I shift between 1.5, 2.5, 3.5x depending on how fine the work I'm doing is. Leave them all around the house.

My real glasses correct for astigmatism -- need them for night driving and movies -- same pair of bifocals (small magnifiers so I can ignore them) for 7 years since they don't get trashed when I solder and drill and all that stuff.
