Maybe it's not technically available but I was doinking around with it last night. Shot stuff, including some stuff using the built-in intervalometer. Really nice.

Still, my concern has been the ease-of-post workflow. I keep thinking that with the long GOP structure that the whole wrapping or rewrapping or transcoding part might be onerous for a one-man band that my friend is contemplating.

When ingesting this stuff, is it a realtime process?

The HPX300 is pretty impressive for the price. But camera, lens, batteries,
and card is about $9,000 after rebate. At least, that's a B&H package price.

The Sony EX1R isn't available yet, but looks like it will be about $6,000 on
the street with battery and a generic memory card. At this end of the
market, that's a significant price difference.

Comparing the HPX300 to the Sony EX3 (which costs about the same, all things
considered) is a bit more involved and interesting. The EX3 produces nice
images. I've only seen a little bit of real-world HPX300 footage, so I can't
make a serious comparison.

That's fine...just a suggestion.

I find the lenses to be TOO sharp. Yes, in my mind, there is such a
thing. Interviews, close ups... the "talent" really don't like how
much HD and those lenses reveal. FILM is softer. But that's why I
like the filmic Panasonic cameras.

Preference I suppose.

WILDLIFE? NATURE... sure go for sharp.

Thanks. I think it's too early to tell. Remember that Autodesk seems to work off of far smaller numbers than Avid or Apple to be successful. The interesting thing is that this product becomes the de facto, mythical "Final Cut Extreme". It satisfies that need and actually takes some heat off of Apple. It becomes a win-win for Apple, because they'll get the hardware sale and may still sell another seat of FC Studio.

One interesting thing to consider is that the sweet spot would probably be a place with 4 or 5 FCP bays hooked to Xsan. These suites would typically all be equipped as "finishing" rooms. If you installed a Smoke on Mac room as the "hero" suite, you could actually cut back on some of the bells-and-whistles in the other rooms. That in and of itself would partially offset the higher cost of the Smoke room.

My apolgies for the terse response. My opinion was based on the
camera .. It's really a plastic price if crap that is awkward to to
hold. And the lens ain't great . Also, as a format , xdcam is really
really lossy. I work on an assortment of action sports HD
programming . Whenever we get xd broil footage , it doesn't cut well
with the other footage (HDCAM or P2 720p), whenever a flash-bulb hits
the lens, the picture is filled with blocks of gunk. We are shooting
right now with the JVC GYHm700 and it's blows the xdcam away . Yes,
it has the 35mbs out if the box like XDCAM, nut you can change the
settings, shoot st higher bitrates, don't gave to wrangle with some
stupid Sony codec to get it into your FCP system, and it takes prime
lenses. Also, we shoot with the canon eos mark 5, though technically
not a video cam, blows the flipping doors off XDCAM. That's two
options, I can provide more, but I am currently standing in the corner
if 47th and broadway and I gave to cross the street now. And I cut

Last December and this January I posted a digital indie feature shot entirely (except for 4 or 5 minor inserts) with two EX1 and EX3 cameras. Cut natively on FCP and graded in Color. I have seen a Blu-ray copy of it projected in a cineplex digital theatre and the image quality was outstanding. Absolutely no issues as a result of compression.

12 of those applicants have 4 year college degrees. ;) Colleges
churn out people with those basic skills by the tens of thousands
each year. There are just not that many jobs waiting for them (and
never has been) so they've got to do something for all the money they
spent gaining these "modern" skills.

Problem is my daughter is now learning basic editing skills in 6th grade.
