Robin, you've got that all wrong.
so wrong, in fact i suspect there could be a language problem here?

simply redigitising from an original timeline, FCP WILL want to
recapture the entire clip.
this has always been the case.

other than EDLs, the only way to restrict the capture to what is used
in the timeline (with or without handles) is by using the Media Manager.

Media Manager WILL (generally) trim an offline sequence.
however, occasionally this function is broken.

from memory, it has worked more often than not,
but as i work on long-form projects,
it could be that my needs have synched with the working periods.
