transcoding before editing, or dumping it into a sequence set to use a
different codec and rendering as they go? I have a bunch of students
about to shoot lots of HDV so it would be useful to know!

One little trick I use is before I leave at night, I open any
sequences that need rendering, set auto render to 1 min, and walk
away. FCP will render every open sequence while I'm gone.
