Re: [FCP-L] Re: Codec Conundrum for Cross Platform Data DVD

PhotoJPEG at 95%+ becomes RGB and triples/quadruples the filesize. At
that "quality" it can be a hog to edit, due to it's bandwidth needs.
Be aware that it cannot contain field-based video either.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: Codec Conundrum for Cross Platform Data DVD

Photo Jpeg at 99% will give you decent file sizes and good quality. h.264, while it's not an editing codec all of the apps can work with it.

Avid and Premiere pro will read DVCProHD files, but Vegas will need a $100 raylight decoder to do it. For the SD stuff, just do DV50, not 25.

Apple Pro Res codec is available for Windows

http://support. apple.com/ downloads/ Apple_ProRes_ QuickTime_ Decoder_1_ 0_for_Windows

But you'd probably have to include the link in a PDF on the DVD.

There's always DV (yuck!).

[FCP-L] Codec Conundrum for Cross Platform Data DVD

L-er's,

I am trying to build a companion DVD for an upcoming book on multicamera techniques and wish to include (16) 2:30 minute ISO clips (mastered at DVCPro HD/29.97) and (6) one minute ISO clips (mastered at SD ProRes 422).

Everything needs to fit onto a DVD9 (Limitation set by publisher).

Further, I need to be as cross platform and NLE agnostic as possible so Mac & PC, Avid, FCP, Vegas and Premiere Pro users can all use the footage.

What would be the best codec to transcode to get the smallest file size with the fastest bit rate and best quality for editing on all the major systems?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: [FCP-L] Down-resed file is larger than original

Yes....because H.264 has a lower data rate than ProRes. But H.264
isn't an editing codec, it is a delivery one (and now apparently an
acquisition one as well). Converting to ProRes is the right thing to
do...as it makes the file editable....and easier for FCP to process.
Even though it is a higher data rate, the compression type is
more...viable.

[FCP-L] Down-resed file is larger than original

Using the new Canon 7D, which records in H264, I shot in the standard 1920x1080p.

Then I wanted to downres to 720p in compressor to make it easier for my old FCP to process.

Orig file at H264 = 166 mb
Converted to Pro Res 422 720p = 211 mb

Can this be right? The 720 file is larger than the 1080 file?

Re: [FCP-L] Color listserve?

I have the world's most experienced Color trainer. And believe it or
not, I'm not recommending myself!

Bob Sliga often trains folks out in LA. He was a da Vinci colorist for
15 years or so before joining the Color team at Apple. I introduced
him to FinalTouch (which Apple bought and turned into Color) about a
year before Apple bought them. I believe he did work or at least
training on it before Apple bought them, and then was brought in with
the rest of the team. Bob is also one of the featured colorists in
"The Art and Technique of Color Correction" on Focal Press.

Bob and I are doing a Color training DVD together, so for those who
can't afford to hire a personal Color trainer, it'll be the next best
thing. It should be available in a couple of months.

And again, the Color listserve is Colorlist@yahoogroups.com.

Re: [FCP-L] Color listserve?

I founded the Colorlist@yahoogroups.com listserve (which had been the
FinalTouch list before that) within an hour of Apple's announcement of
Color, I believe.

Feel free to join. For anyone who had joined in the past and hadn't
been accepted, I apologize. I haven't been getting messages from yahoo
about new subscribers and I'm the only listmum.

After my two surgeries, I can only use single vision lenses now. In
fact, to use a magnifier, I have to first take off my glasses.

Weird but true.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

I¹ve had similar troubles with bi-focals at the computer... The distance is
wrong for both parts of the lens. A few years ago, my optometrist
introduced me to ³office lenses². They are a progressive lens, designed for
work at a computer. The main part of the lens is designed for normal 2-3¹
distance of a computer monitor. The upper part of the lens allows me to see
correctly out to about 25 feet... Perfect for most indoor office activity.
There is a small section at the bottom for reading at closer distances. I
keep a pair of these at work and another at home. They work great.

Ask your optometrist for ³offlce lenses².

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

I agree the two pair method doesn't work for everyone.

You're wise to be very cautious WRT laser surgery. My surgeon gives his
prospective laser patients a 1 to 2 hour entrance exam before approving
them for the surgery.

In my case, because I also had a nerve palsy that was causing the double
vision, he wanted to make sure I could hold my right eye centered for at
least 45 seconds before he's let me have the procedure. He gave me half
the dose of Valium he gives to most patients, so I'd have the best shot
at holding it steady.

It was still risky, but I was motivated to hold it steady because if I
couldn't hold it, then I'd soon not be able to get a prescription made
that would correct for all my optical problems. That would have ended my
video career and severely restricted my comings and goings. You can imagine.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Varifocals? (as they are called in the UK)? I've had them for several
years and are good for everything from reading, laptop, big monitors
and driving. Take some getting used to, though.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

Yeah, only I've tried having multiple pairs of glasses and it turns
out that I'm too lazy to carry them around or look for them. I had a
pair, but I never used them.

Also, the very nature of my work demands quick changes in focal
distance. My edit monitors are middle distance, the script is close
and the viewing monitor is far away. And every once in a while I have
to actually look at the client.

Plus I have to hop up every ten or fifteen minutes and go to another
room for something or other, sometimes just to avoid sitting too long
and getting one of those killer blood clots.

So for me, trifocals are better. Sort of like my iPhone, for my eyes.
It may not be the best solution, but it is the best all-in-one solution.

Also, I'm afraid of laser surgery. If they screw up what vision I have
left, I'm done and I can't afford to take the risk.

Re: [FCP-L] Re: OT: Monitors

There is one solution that sometimes works better. Two different pairs
of bifocals. One pair with your distance correction and your reading
correction, the other pair with your mid-range correction (for the
distance to your monitors) and your reading correction. The second pair
is sometimes called CRT glasses.

That worked great for many years, until I had both laser surgery 3 years
ago, and eye muscle surgery last summer to correct double vision. Now I
have a single pair of glasses with very minor distance correction. For
some unknown reason that has baffled my optometrist and my
ophthalmologist, I can read fine at distances as close as 12 inches.
Closer than that, and I pull out a lighted magnifier.

[FCP-L] OL VDSLR with Intent

Oliver,

My Intent is that this style of shooting is out there and its only a
matter of time before a major feature is shot using these cameras. The
lenses, the set up time with a smaller body and the "biggy" costs, is
to become an issue in high end shooting. The ramifications of these
factors has already shaken RED to its core. Now if the are smart, they
will price Scarlet competitively and they will grab this market if
they don't get that, Scarlet will be still born. Tune in 16:00 PST
November 30th to see the next episode of this saga unfold (maybe).

Thanks for your response Tom, its a POP account so it normally appears
on both my iPhone and MBP, I then have a pref setting to delete from
server after 1 day.

Its back working again, but I definitely got a message on my iPhone
which did not come through to my MBP, each device checks the servers
using POP, one got it, the other did not. I understood that POP checks
the integrity of the data when it sends it to the device and resends
any bad packets, so it should have picked up the error, it failed, and
thats a bit sobering that it failed to do that, I guess shit happens.

Re: [FCP-L] TEST

If this is an IMAP account messages will appear in one place or the other, whichever receives first. POP account messages will appear in both places. Not sure if this matters, but just a thought.

All the best,

Tom
