Try shooting one of those big work lights that you can buy for $40
at Home Depot through a white bedsheet hanging from a curtain rod.
I've seen a couple of "homemade" lighting set ups on the internet.
Otherwise, I think Lowel is probably the cheapest stuff that is
professional. I have a small kit and a big soft light from them, but
the total was probably $1800 for 4 lights. THe Rifa softbox was about
$800 I think for their biggest size.

The DV lights are plenty powerful enough for most modern cameras and
are small and not a huge wattage.
Look at the VIP kits. Everything's about a grand though. EBay is your
friend if you can't spend that much.
If you go the "homegrown" lighting kit direction, there's this
lightweight, flame-resistant material you can get at any fabric store
that's white. Hang a large sheet of it on one side of your talent and
kick a halogen construction lamp through it, then buy a large (4 foot
by 2 foot or bigger) piece of foam core and put it on the other side
of the talent. For under $50 you're lit! No backlight, but maybe you
just put a regular desk lamp on the floor without a lamp shade
directly behind the talent and now you have a backlight!
