it was the thumbnails made me sit up and take notice; the issue we have is
in fact in FCP itself.
One thing that might be of interest is the NextoDI NVS2500 (NVS-2500) Video
Storage Pro cut out the laptop on set altogether..

I'm not sure where to elaborate unless you can explain the issue in more
detail.
Basically you can't use firewire to transfer files.
USB or SxS card reader transfers files.
What way to go depends on Computer gear such as laptop with built in Express
slot or willingness to buy Sony's SxS card reader or just use USB out of the
camera to read the cards.
Use Sony ClipBrowser to copy the clips. Install SxS driver if using Express
port in Laptop for copy.
Use Sony XDCAM Transfer to wrap to MOV.
You can also install Sony EX XDCAM Log & Transfer plugin for FCP to use
instead of XDCAM Transfer.
